Went to check the cooling system reservoir as I haven’t done it in awhile!
But to my horror when I opened the cap there was a bit of light yellow/orange qunk on the bottom of the cap and a bit round the side of the reservoir, got my dad to look and he said that it aint that bad but what other signs should there be on a 1.8?

She is running better than ever!
She has never over heated
She is good on petrol

IF ANY ONE IS THINKING ABOUT GETTING A 75, DONT BE PUT OF BY THIS, MY TANK (Her Name) HAS HAD A HARD WORKING LIFE BUT SHE IS STILL GOING STRONG!!!

Help??

Orange is often the colour of the dye put into coolants to make it easier to detect leaks.

Have you lost coolant ? (remember on the 75 the level full line is horizontal not vertical so your expansion tank shouldn't ever be full when you check it).

Don't jump to any conclusions yet. Has the car overheated etc .etc.

Check your oil for water in it etc. etc.

Do a search of the forums for hgf. you'll find plenty of advice on what to check for before coming to any conclusion.

Good luck

Yep, got the same stuff in the exp. tank, the garage put it in quite a while ago to see if the water pump was broken(which it was :irked: ).

Don't worry, should be ok, just look again next week and if the level is still the same, you're ok. :D

Well my dad said to just fill the tank up as much as it will go cos any water that it don’t need will go!
Ill have a look 2 Moro see what level it’s at then look a week later!
But she is for a service on Friday ill get them to check for HGF!

Oh Red Rover yeah I said that I had a 2.5 v6 and the car says it’s a 2.5 v6 but she aint!

Sorry lol

Thax All!

If you fill the tank up then there isn't any spare expansion space for the heated water/steam to go into so I suggest you don't fill it right up. Afaik it can't just vent off without a problem. Its a pressurised system.

Why is this thread entitled "My car has got HGF" ? Until you know that for a fact, I think it is irresponsible to state that. Next time preface it with "I think My car......

If you find out it has got HGF, that is when it would be appropriate to start a thread with that heading!

No no no no, do NOT do this. You must ONLY fill the expansion tank to the "max" level. Fill it any further and there is nowhere for the coolant to expand to (why do you think it's called an expansion tank?), the pressure has to go somewhere and will either force coolant out through a joint somewhere, or past the headgasket itself.

Sorry sorted!

I will Go and empty the tank a bit! lol
Sorry i miss heard my dad he said fill it up to the max not the top!
thats my fault!
lol

It would have been messy if you drove around with a full expansion tank, you'd have been cleaning it up for days lol. Good job you sorted it. Has the oil cap/expansion cap got any 'mayo' on, is their dirt build up in the expansion tank. What colour coolant does your car have in btw?

#12 ·
No there does not seem to be any mayo on the oil cap!
As you see in the pic with the yellow cap but on the black cap it shows what qunk that I was talking about!

But last nite I spend 2 hours in the dark with a torch taking the cooling system tank out and I washed it out and refilled it up to the level!
I don’t seem to be losing any coolant and I did a 60 miles trip to day and all seems ok but there has been a build up of this gunk in the coolant tank to day but I think it my be the stuff out of the pipes!
I can’t tell you want colour the coolant is! I don’t know!

You took the coolant tank out and cleaned it, refilled it with coolant but you don't know what colour the coolant is?
Coolant should be orange, extended life Havoline coolant otherwise known as OAT coolant.
Oil cap looks alright but the coolant cap looks like it has some emulsified oil on it.
When you drained the coolant out of the tank did you have any oil in it?
Also the picture of the coolant tank looks like it's full of oil, might just be the picture.

Ok yeah it’s orange! But I only put a small amount of just water in it just to top it up! Yeah on the floor there seems to be a bit of oil also where the coolant darned out! But looking in the coolant tank there is water in there but a small amount of what looks like oil on the surface!

The only thing I can suggest is monitor the coolant.

If it starts going down then get it looked at immediately.
It sounds like the beginning of the head gasket failing.
If there is oil in the coolant then somewhere the gasket is not doing it's job.
Unless someone down the line has put oil in the wrong place!!! Wouldn't be the first time someone has done it.

If the coolant doesn't go down keep an eye on it for the amount of oil in it, if it starts turning a nice shade of brown then it's game over.

Hum!
Well she will be tested for it when she goes in for her service on Friday and if so think I will be claming on the good old warranty company!
The coolant does not seem to be going down or turning brown I don’t think! But only time will tell!

Wish me luck
Thax for your help!

If there is a problem what part will I need to get again just another head gasket or a new engine or what?

#18 ·
If it is the headgasket and you catch the problem early like this, it should just mean a new headgasket. It's when people don't do the checks you've done, let the coolant drop and the engine overheat, and drive on with the temperature gauge in the red, that new engines are needed.

Looked at the coolant level to day and it was really low but then come to realise that the pipe at the bottom had started coming off so I think that’s why I had lost some coolant! That’s what you get for playing around with it in the dark! So I cleaned it out again and this time there was a load of brown slime in the tank so think I have got HGF, but it’s not a bad case of it!

my car is being looked at on Friday but I need to carry on using it but will running the car with the oil in the coolant do any harm to the radiator, pump or any thing else?

Trying to work out why my car would have suffered from this all I can work out was that my car was standing not doing any thing for 8 months thought the winter so I think that’s why I may have got HGF!

Also to help me I have just been told so I am now 100% what the head gasket is! Sounds nice and cheap to get another one, but the problem is getting a new one fitted!

All fun and games!!

When is the fan meant to come on? I know its works still!
Oh will I do any harm if I carry on driving it when the coolant has oil in it?
You don't want to hear this but driving with hgf could cost you dear. No point in running an engine that you know is broke.

The fan will cut in if you run the engine, it just takes time.

If you think about it, using the engine now means all the oil and waterways are getting blocked with gunk. The more gunk, the more trouble in getting your engine cleaned up. Best to avoid.
