just wanted to know if anyone could advise or has had the same problem car is an 02 diesle 39000 miles it started dropping a gear and losing drive now has totaly lost drive had oil changed no good

I'm sorry to say that this doesn't sound good. Prepare for the worst I'm afraid as it sounds like the curse of the JATCO has struck yet again. The good news is that they are repairable. But it's not cheap. Depending on where you are there are some good specialists who can undertake the work for you.

Was the oil changed recently, is the car under any warranties, is it a dealer doing the work?

no warranty just have to bite the bullet oil changed by ex dealer at start of problems seemed worse nothing came up on diagnostics cheers

Ashcroft Transmissions are supposed to be very good and do a recon. box for £820 ish. Sorry about your problem. Don't take it to a dealer, the consensus is that they know bu...r all about the boxes and will only feed it on to a transmission specialist anyway. Problem is, if you can't drive it how do you get it to the w/shop ? I think Ashcroft are at Enfield, Essex. Perhaps the way is to get it from them and have it fitted near you.

Did they use he right oil ? If they did not use the right tranny oil it will make the tranny not operate properly.Use the Texaco N402 recommended.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: On the back of the unit, located above the drive shaft is a location bolt for the brake band. This is a 19ml Hex/Special Torx bolt. This is often mistaken for the level plug � it is NOT. Please DO NOT remove this as it CANNOT be refitted without stripping the box apart. If this is removed you will loose reverse gear.
The level bung is located on the base of the unit and is a 5mm Allen key bolt."



And guess what was on Ebay a few weeks ago- one with no reverse
up the road from me in Chirk, I very nearly bought it!

Sorry, thought it was Enfield. Funny, on phone they said "use any good quality auto transmission fluid and Dextron 2 is good". Texaco N402 is the correct fluid. Rover (£20.70/5litres+VAT) and Land Rover stock it. Castrol themselves said they do not make a fluid suitable for Jatco boxes. Box only takes about 4 litres at drain refill.
