Heater fan resistor pack failed?

Hi all,

From all of the threads I have seen, it'd appear that if only fan settings 2-4 are functioning, the heater fan resistor pack has failed. On my ZR its only fan setting 1 that isn't working. Would that still be down to the heater fan resistor pack?

Thanks
Martyn

I have had this same resistor pack for my MK1 ZR when speeds 1 and 2 were not working. Technozen is an absolute star, shipped me 2 sets of the resistors with full instructions, which arrived the day after i paid him for them. He is certainly the man to speak to on the matter!

Best bet is to use 3 - 4 for heating and 1 - 2 for cooling.
It doesn't really matter what speeds you use for heating or cooling, all put stress on the resistor pack, especially speeds 2 and 3, speed 4 bypasses the pack.
Add to the equation a poorly designed original part which will inevitably fail, even the new OE resistor packs have the same underrated components.

Unfortunately I no longer supply the repair kits, however the following 7 watt resistors from Maplin and other component suppliers can be used to make a much more reliable repair...

Use two of each value in series to make each resistor.

0.1 ohm order code L0.1
0.22 ohm order code L0.22
0.68 ohm order code L0.68

technozen, seeing as your savvy in these departments, are the 200 bubble era packs better built than the new 25/ZR versions? I've got through 2 packs from a 25 and both failed, I salvaged a 200 pack and it's been perfect since. *touch of wood*

Unfortunately, no.

The same value resistor coils are used on the packs fitted to the 200/400/MGF/25/45/ZR/ZS and Freelander.

I have checked the latest part and the coils do not differ other than the fact that they have more ceramic "goo" on the coils for physical support.

To anyone that intends to replace the weedy coil packs - just take a look behind the glove box and look at the OE item, you will realise why it is so prone to failure! It actually looks like it would be more at home in a 60's wireless! :)

Wasn't aimed at you Si, sorry if it came across as a bit of a dig.

It was just a general hint as to where to get an uprated one if you don't want to diy it yourself.

No worries Stu :)

Just saying that at ÂŁ15, that's a good deal...like I said mine went over 12 months ago, was going to do the fix, but I am crap at soldering so only option was to buy new...thing is it was ÂŁ25 posted for me :(

Si:)

I "checked" this product when I was selling resistor kits, lower gauge wire than the originals and the resistance values are also wrong! The same follows for their ceramic resistors too.

As mentined in my earlier post you can purchase the correct value resistors from Maplin for less than ÂŁ3, I can email you my repair guide if you are unsure about the correct fitment etc.

Just to add to this.. I openly admit i am a bit cack-handed with soldering, and it took me about 30 mins to take the item out and replace the coil packs with resistors. This also included remembering how i was taught to solder at school! :) It really is a simple job and is much better than buying an expensive OE part that will only fail again..

Just my $0.02! :)

replaced mine about a month ago, got a complete resistor pack off of e-bay, original part for ÂŁ9.99 including free delivery, and about 5-10 mins to put in. Now works fine , by the way only speed 3&4 was working now all good, lovely and quiet inside the cabin when on speed 1
