Hi guys,

I think that it is time to start the group buy thread!

For those who may have missed it, I have been in discussions with Ricky Evans, a company that manufactures heated windscreens for a wide range of cars. The most typical application is for use in motorsport, but other forums for a wide range of cars have used Ricky Evans for windscreens in the past - often at prices that undercut the original non-heated OEM windscreens.

Ricky Evans have access to the original tooling for the MGF/TF windscreen, and the windscreens would be to OEM specification (green tint, black edging). The heater elements in these screens are identical to the technology used on Ford's Focus.

These screens carry the same E and other certification markings as the original screens.

The mounting shoe on the screen is not supplied fitted, but this can be specified and supplied accordingly.

The standard windscreen is fitted with a trim, which can often be re-used, but may need replacing. Ricky Evans can supply these at a quarter of the new price from X-Part (the windscreen itself is actually almost half the price of a new screen from X-Part!).

These heated screens do not come with the heating electrics supplied. I think that the best option here will to add a relay to the existing heated rear window circuit - and we'll be working this out in due course.

There is more detail in this thread: http://google.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=460825

Now comes the cost:

The basic screen will cost ÂŁ170 + VAT (currently 20%)
The windscreen trim, if required, costs ÂŁ22 + VAT
Postage, packaging and insurance costs ÂŁ44

To this price, add the cost of getting the windscreen fitted (about ÂŁ40).

The total cost, before wiring will therefore be ÂŁ310-ÂŁ320 fitted.

Ricky Evans is asking for a 30% deposit to be placed on ordering. Minimum order number is 5.

So, to start the ball rolling, I am going to be ordering 2! (Gulp!)
Rob Bell: Windscreen + trim + rear view mirror mounting shoe fitted
Rob Bell: Windscreen only

Please add to this list if you are DEFINITELY interested (we can organize a second order at a later date for those who are currently considering the option).

Many thanks - and over to you chaps!

I'll be the first person to say a definate yes.

Let me know when you want deposits paid in.
Will do. Do you need the windscreen trim too Derek, or are you planning to re-use the existing one?

With the screen trim, would it only need replacing if the current one looks crap or is there a risk that upon removal of the old screen, the trim gets fubar?

Put me down for a screen and a shoe, trim depends on the above.

Wilco. That's five, the minimum order - so it's going to go ahead - but I suspect that there may be a few more orders to be placed. Will probably look to collecting deposits and placing the order next week if that's okay with you guys? :)

Windscreen + mirror mount + trim if necessary, please. I do not intend to fit it myself so a fitting day somewhere is definitely desirable. I've already got the HRW electrics, but wiring inside the dash might be interesting (and best done after fitting, once the connections are known).

Rob: If you can find out what the connector required for the window will be, i'll start looking into wiring loom. With 12 weeks notice, even I can find the time to make up 5 (potentially).
Good idea - will do :)

List currently stands at:

1. Rob Bell: Windscreen + trim + rear view mirror mounting shoe fitted
2. Rob Bell: Windscreen only
3. Derek Bartram: Windscreen + trim + rear view mirroe mounting shoe fitted
4. Julian Foulgar: Windscreen + trim + rear view mirror mounting shoe fitted
5. Andy1970h: Windscreen + trim + rear view mirror mounting shoe fitted
6. warden: Windscreen + trim + rear view mirror mounting shoe fitted
7. Dave B (oommbahh): Windscreen + trim + rear view mirror mounting shoe fitted

The plan is to put in the order on Friday 23rd March, so if anyone else would like to add their name to the definite list, then great. Remember, there is a 30% deposit - potentially I can collect via paypal, or ideally (for me) payable directly to Ricky Evans (I'll let you chaps know)

Derek, I haven't forgot about the connector question, I'll chase that up today :)

Rob - I assume you will PM us with payment details? Being in Switzerland PayPal much easier for me but can send UK cheque if pushed

Note that it will have to be shipped to my parents` address in the UK so need to add shipping cost.

If possible to get organised the wiring loom (at extra cost) to save buggering around, that would be great as well!

Well done for organising this as many other initiatives easily bite the dust too often.

Yes, will PM you all with more details towards the end of the week :) I haven't added P&P as yet, because there may be an opportunity for some of us to have a group fitting session (I need to chase up the local Tamworth windscreen fitter).

Chaps, Ricky Evans is on holiday this week - so I'll put the order in next week. I think that Ricky is still answering emails, so I'll drop him an email and get some detail on the loom plug, so we can get that side of the project rolling :)

I'm starting to wonder if sorting a group fitting date, or at least getting a fitter to confirm a price and general availability may be worth doing prior to ordering; there's lots more interest in this, but not without the fitting issue being addressed further.

I don't know how the other people who have already commited feel, but I for one would be happy to wait a few more weeks to get this sorted before ordering; particularily if ordering more may reduce costs.

Thanks :)

Have spoken to A 2 B windscreens - they're happy to come out to Ricky Evans at his Tamworth base to fit the windscreens for us. The best price he's quoting me is ÂŁ55+VAT - rather more than I had in mind - (ÂŁ66!) - if anyone local has a recommendation for someone who'd be cheaper, that'd be great, otherwise we'll go with that, and save the ÂŁ44 postage.

BTW, he says that the existing windscreen trim cannot be salvaged, so we'd all better budget for a new replacement.

So, in summary:

Option 1 - group fitting in Tamworth outside Ricky Evan's industrial unit:

Windscreen (ÂŁ170) + trim (ÂŁ22) + fitting (ÂŁ55) + VAT = ÂŁ296.40

Option 2 - delivery to UK address:

Windscreen (ÂŁ170) + trim (ÂŁ22) + P&P (ÂŁ44) + VAT = ÂŁ274 (to which you'll need to add local fitting charge)

Neither option includes the electrics required to run the screen

I'll find out through work who the Toyota Garage use to fit windscreens, see if I can't get a deal by name dropping a little bit.

To echo Derek, I am happy to wait a little longer if we can secure more orders / get a fitting day.

#31 ·
Same with me regarding a wait as I am in the UK in 2 weeks (which is too soon) and my next visit will the summer when I can pick up the delivered screen from my parents (fitting will have to be here in Switzerland) + more orders = less price and if a loom can be organised as well, even better.

I am happy to go with the flow, fast or slow. I am very pleased with your initiative Rob and do not want to put any spanners in the works.

Too often `talk is cheap`. Good to see some action from other forum members who are prepared to put hard cash down on the table to follow through on this good initiative.

I'm happy to wait too, it looks like Spring has sprung around our way so I probably won't need to use it in anger until next Winter.
It would also give more time to get the electrical side worked out, I'm guessing it would make sense for me to get the switch and relay for a rear screen anyway so that I'm starting from the same point as everyone else.

If it helps, I can look at producing a loom for those without as well.... I'll try and reused the standard plugs and produce a plug through solution, which will handle those with and those without (obviously you'll still need a switch).

#30 ·
I am happy to wait too - there isn't a desparate rush, because unfortunately the lead time will mean that the screens will become available at the least convenient time for me irrespective of ordering now or in a couple of weeks time :)

Kameleon, that'd be great if you could. If the Toyota garage's man is mobile and can come to Ricky Evans, we'll save on the transport cost, which would be the ideal.

Famous last words Andy!

I've not yet heard back from Ricky - so I guess he's enjoying his holiday break! I'll give him a call next week and chase up the remaining details.

So as to give folks a little more time to think about coming on board, perhaps what I'll do is hold off until the beginning of next month (a little over 2 weeks), as I'll be away the week after next. This means we've all been paid (hopefully!) before putting down hard cash deposits! :broon:

I would love too and have been trying to justify to myself why and how I should/can. Reality is I'm going to be needing a replacement screen in the next couple of weeks for the re-build if I'm to get it on the road this summer and can't justify buying two screens.

I'll be watching the results with interest though.

Andy

Just heard back from Rick. The screens do not come with an electrical connector - we'll have to fit one. Which actually makes life a little easier, as we'll know the exact specification of the connector we plan to fit! :)

Rick has also confirmed that he want's all the deposit money in one lump sum. So I'll collect the deposits, and I do have a PayPall account, so this is probably the easiest way forward. Only trouble is, PayPall charges doesn't it? Anyone recall how much? I tend to use it more for buying than selling, so I don't recall!! D'oh!

With paypal there is an option where the Buyer pays the fees! There is a box one can tick...

That's perfect then...

Anyone know if the plugs that connect to (for example) the rear heated window switch are standard?

What i'd like to do is create a plug/socket combo to go inbetween the existing switch and plug with a branch off for relay+plug for heated windscreen; that way it'll minimise the number of cuts into the standard loom.
