greasing clutch release bearing & arm

i have tried loads of things to solve the problem of my creeking clutch - now i'm down to greasing the lever & release bearing.

Done a search and i still can't find how to do this - i know it is tricky - anyone able to offer help as to how it can be done?

one good way i thought was to remove the starter motor and that should give room for me to get some grease round there but the bolts are very stiff so i'm back to the drawing board.......

any help much appreciated!!!

I would be very careful about where you put grease. Any grease in the wrong place around the clutch mechanism could end up with a contaminated clutch.

I would say that the release bearing is a non greasable item. If you suspect it then you need to change it with a new item. You do get some grease to put on the main shaft to lubricate the linear movement of the bearing on the shaft, but this is not standard grease and is used sparingly.

The release arm is best done by forcing release oil through the dust seal on the outside of the bell housing, but again, too much could give problems if it gets onto the clutch.

If you are having major problems I would recommend taking the gearbox out and replacing the items. A good time to fit the upgraded release arm.

Any in situ oiling etc is only ever going to be a temporary fix.

Don't know if this helps http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?p=3105307&posted=1#post3105307

As Clive said the clutch release bearing itself is an enclosed type, so, as such cannot be lubricated, the only part in that area which can be lubricated is the external part of the operating arm from where it pivots at the gearbox and includes the clevis pin for the clutch slave cylinder.

Have you physically checked the operation of the clutch whilst someone else operates the clutch, also check all the mountings of the slave cylinder etc and remember to check the tightness of the mounting bolts, any looseness can cause strange noises.

so how do you think i'd be best to 'force' grease past the dust seal?

I have the right type of grease it says to use in the manual in the clutch area (molybdenum disulphide) but not a grease gun for example........

how would i get it past the seal?????

sorry, not been on much due to badly sprained ankle which has laid me out for a week.
All I've done is greased the outside of the clutch arm where it enters the g/box, there is no way to get to the release bearing with the g/box insitu.
Greasing the arm is a 2 stage thing
1st, give the arm/gearbox interface a good soaking with a releasant oil, preferably not wd40. Let that soak for a few hours activating the clutch a few times.
2nd, the grease, I used copper grease, just slap a load around the arm/gearbox interface.
All this can be done from the underside. Regrease a couple of times a year.

Stuck... solid

hi guys new to the forums but need help... i have a mgf 1.8 vvc.. arm is stuck solid at first.. droped gearbox well the same as changing clutch anyway... had a large bar on the end of the arm and it moves but WAY to much pressure to do anything the way it should... i`m planning on getting the arm out and clear / refit or if i can get hold of a new one if anyone know where please help....

the problem is how i remove the shaft? pull it hard?? heat it up ?? i`ve used wd40 type stuff on it but just still the same not so much movement but some...

i`ve removed the clutch and fly wheel to see if i could manover the gearbox out with no luck.... next plan remove engine mountings to move it over a tiny bit to get it out any help would be great cheers

I do hope having the car is worth it !!

Firstly I would check the slave cylinder bracket, look straight down onto the slave cylinder and see if the piston arm is dead straight. Mine was slightly offset causing a very stiff clutch and popping the seal on the cylinder. I removed the mounting bracket and bent it back to shape (Only needed a very slight adjustment with a big bar and 2lb hammer!). The cylinder arm was dead straight when refitted and the clutch now works perfectly. I also used Duck Oil on the release arm to the gearbox.
