Goddammit!!! I sheared my lock nut key!!!

2060 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  matrix MG
Ok so I removed my wheels to give them a good propper clean. Uppon fitting the last wheel back on the car and tourquing it up, the lugs (all two of them) in the lock nut key sheared clean off. This could pose a bit of a problem if I need a wheel off in a hurry. I was told to beat an old socket onto them but looking at the lock nuts, I don't think thats an option. Anybody any Ideas?

I would personally get rid of the original locking nuts, the lock nut keys may as well be made of chocolate they are so weak.

Again this is late ones. Early ones used a better system with 5 points on them. The later ones used a 2 or 3 point system and the even later ones used the McGuards.

You can indeed hit an 18MM socket over them even with the round ones with two cut outs and they will come undone.

Beat a socket onto them.

Or, the whole reason I've never used locking nuts. Go to most hardware stores (or halfords sell them), and a buy locking nut removal tool/bit. They're fairly cheap and have a "thread" inside them, so as you turn it to undo the locking nut, it also cuts into it to grip it. Ideal for thieves really.

my stepdad couldnt get a nut off the other day (just a normal one), took it to the local garage, they couldnt do it, took it to vauxhall......They had to weld a bar to it!

so where theres a will theres a way, but just try what BSmovies said really!

Slacken the other three and take it for a spin round the block ;).

Otherwise, batter a socket over it; chisel it off; weld something to it; angle grind the wheel off; go to the scrapyard and see if they have another key; get a threaded nut.. Loads of options. Dont worry about it too much.

Cheap 19mm socket hammered on will get them off. Had all 4 of mine off like that in minutes.

I'll have a go at the socket. I was told to get a splined socket and grind the face of it so it is kinda sharp, and it will cut it's shape over the nut as it's hammered on. I have a box of old spare sockets lying around here somewhere.

Yeah, the socket is very soft. It isn't even round any more. It's more of an egg shape. They really aren't up to much.
Thank's for the great advice as usual guys. Some well earned rep on way for ya's. I'll let y'all know how it goes.
You could always buy the correct removal socket from Xpart ! Just quote the letter or number from the old one.
