I revently bought a rover 420il petrol "T" series 99 model. When i picked it up i noticed a slight notch when going into 3rd from 2nd, if gear changed slower you seem to avoid the notch, all else seemed fine. Last week i started having problems with going to 2nd from 1st, it felt stiff and clunky and has made a clunking noise a few times when going into 2nd gear(is it common to hear gears clunk occasionally). However this only seemed to be a problem in the mornings( had slight problem only once or twice later in the day). the problem with 2nd seems to be intermittent but the notch into 3rd is there 30% of the time. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you are having toruble changing down but not when changing up then it could be the clutch not disengaging fully. This could be down to a worn clutch spring plate or the hydraulics need bleeding.

Alos worth looking at the fluid level in the box (gear box oil) - if it is low then the synchromesh might not be able to do it's job properly.
