More gearbox problems :(

Following my earlier posts about rebuilding my gearbox, I refitted to the car and all seemed well last weekend.

However, I noticed a little oil on the drive again and had a look earlier. My diff seals are dry, but im loosing oil from around the selector rod that joints the gear lever rod.

I changed the seal during the rebuild and the little rubber boot. (I guess it keeps dirt away from the seal)

I used a measured 2.2 litres of oil into an absolutely clean and dry casing.

Anyone had this problem before?? It only happens when the seal is at its lowest point. [I parked the car on the flat part of my drive and there was 1 drip on the floor in the morning].

For those who haven.t seen my on going posts, gearbox is a PG1 unit.

Do you think I should refit the seal and use a bit of hylomar after cleaning??

Any advice would be brilliant, Im planning to have a go on Sunday.

It's leaking out of the selector shaft seal?

Was it OK before the rebuild? If so, I'd replace the seal and see what happens...
Thanks for reply Major :)

It was ok before, and I changed the seal as a precaution. Guess I shouldn't have messed with it as it was ok before

Update.... It was a diff seal.

I had changed them as a precaution and had tapped it too far into the casing. - (well I was following the Rover service manual and it def states to tap seal in place using old seal.)

Thanks Major for your help, I was puzzled too at the thought of a selector shaft seal, but it was running down from the diff seal and giving the impression that the selector seal was weeping.

Thanks also to Lates (www.lates600.com) who changed the seal for me and did a proper job :)

Steve, why did you rebuild your gearbox??

Dunno if you've seen my other posts but I think I may have some issues with the box on my 220, gettin some nasty noises at high rpm

Any ideas/advice?

It's goin into the garage anyway end of the week, was gonna get em to change the gearbox oil and take a look

Craig,

I rebuilt the gearbox because one of the diff bearings collapsed and the metal ball bearings fell out :(

Also after 155K, the mainshaft bearings were very noisy. They were noisy for the last 20K, and I kept thinking about doing them, just needed that little push.

I have changed the 4th and 5th gear ratio's. Used a freelander gearbox as a donor. Its knocked 500RPM off the revs in top gear. (ie i can do 70MPH at 2,400 RPM)

Just returned from Wiltshire yesterday and covered 370 miles for £32 of fuel @83.9 Per litre. (some of that was commuting to work and traffic etc)

I was planning on fitting the newer freelander gearbox as I was told it had covered about 10K, but the diff input splines were unequal due to the IRD unit on the freelander.

Also the case was different so I decided to strip and cobble together the best parts.

Cost in all to rebuild with all bearings, all seals and hylomar to join cases - £116.

Could have got a scrap box for about £50, but not exactly the same, would have been a montego diesel or an 820 box. (monty prob wouldn't have fitted due different bell housing)

Your noise could be bearings, play in the diff or even low oil. Try an oil change first and go from there. Gearbox strip and rebuild was very easy, although I tapped one of the diff seals in too far and it leaked very very slightly. Changed now thanks to a forum member who knows what he is doing.

Remember I just dabble with cars!! Kinda 'Codge it and bodge it' in a safe and acceptable way ;)

I was doin like 5000+ rpm in 3rd the other day and I'm sure I heard like a metaly sound tho, dunno what that could be.... I do get a whiny noise that comes and goes when you press the clutch if you know what I mean? Is that bearings? I know a bit bout cars but not that much !!

Goin in the garage end of the week, I'll get them to change the oil first and take it from there, just annoying coz car seems to be running good now after the head gasket bein fixed, it's seems to have much more torque than the 1.4K !! :D

If the noise is there when the clutch pedal is up, and goes away when you press the pedal down then it almost certainly is the input shaft bearing.

Is this an expensive/difficult job?? And is it worth doing? Does it affect performance or does is merely make a noise ??

Eventually it will fail -but I have no idea how many thousands of miles it may take. I believe that someone on www.rovertech.net was selling recon ones for £130.

Basically it's a gearbox out job but after that is not too bad.
