Hi. My fuel gauge isn't working properly - when the tank is empty it reads 1/4 full, and when it's full it reads 3/4 full. The warning light seems ok - I managed 40-50 miles with the light on before it ran out, which seems right to me. It took about 40 litres (60 quid @ 1.469) until the pump shut off, which sounds a bit short.

I've searched for this fault, and found quite a few problems with non-linear gauges, but nothing quite like this.

2004 45 TD Club, BTW.

Any ideas, anyone?

Well, it's a 55 litre tank so the pump must have been rather twitchy - I find it's a common problem and don't push the hose in any more than necessary these days.

As for the fault you've described - this is a wild, stab-in-the-dark guess...
The sensor may include a ballast resistor, if it does, it's probably failed.

I've filled up, and managed to brim it this time - and the gauge has gone all the way to full. That's one problem sorted. Now I just need to find out why it won't go down to empty. Float arm sticking maybe?
