RATHER THAN use the word Ghia on the forthcoming 7-seater S-Max, Ford says the use of 'Titanium' as a top specification level indicates the sportier interior and exterior finishes.
That means more polished metal and carbon fibre trim finishes than wood effect for the range which goes on sale next month.
There are three trim and equipment options: LX, Zetec and Titanium. The Zetec specification is expected to account for 53% of sales followed by 37% for Titanium and 10% for LX.
Even though the S-Max is likely to appeal to a more sportier type of driver than that of the Galaxy, 84% of customers are still expected to opt for a diesel engine.
The 2.0-litre TDCI 140PS unit will take around 56% of sales, the 1.8-litre TDCI 125PS unit 28%, the five cylinder 2.5-litre, 220PS petrol unit, similar to that used in the Focus ST, will attract 5% of customers and the 2.0-litre, 145PS petrol unit 11% of sales.
The likely best-selling model, the Zetec 2.0-litre TDCI is priced at £19,995. VED duty bands are E3 and F2 depending on engine choice.
Because the new 7-seat S-Max is a totally new model type in the MPV sector, positioned between large people carrier MPVs and compact five or seven-seat MPVs such as the Vauxhall Zafira, VW Touran and Ford Focus C-Max, Ford says that sales forecasts are only a guide at this stage.
Figures from Eurotaxglass, Emmox and Cap, issued last week, show the S-Max will have class-leading residual values.
According to Eurotaxglass' forecasting editor, Jason King, the new S-Max 2.0 TDCi Zetec, which he describes as "a very interesting derivation from other large MPVs, and a revelation in the way it handles" - is expected to retain around 42% of list price after 60,000 miles/three years.
This performance exceeds the similarly priced Mitsubishi Grandis 2.0 DiD Classic (39%), the Toyota Corolla Verso 2.2 D-4D T180 (41%) and the Vauxhall Zafira 1.9CDTi SRi (36%) - the last of which will suffer depreciation of £12,052 against the S-Max's £11,347.
