Fault code reading on Honda 1.6 SOHC Rover 416 GSI with Rover diagnostic plug

Greetings

I have a 1994 M plater Rover 416GSi touring (estate) with a Honda 1.6 SOHC lump with Honda ECU etc etc. I thought the honda style diagnostic plug for this was near the glove compartment in he passenger bay however I have found what I think is a ROVER MEMS style diagnostic plug (round 3 pin socket with a captive rubber cover with a rather condom like bulb on the end) in the engine bay

Parting with five quid for a dolled up 2 cables and a switch and resistor in a box and leaflet masquerading as a fault code reader ( from Halfords for Honda Rover), i am faced with the dillema of which two of the three wires to this trailing diagnostic socket are the ones that get shorted out by the box of tricks to display the fault codes

The "check engine light" comes on infrequently (once in a trip or not at all in a 12 mile journey to work) and not at all if revs are kept sub 3.5 k... light goes off on restarting - car has had a new cat and lambda after a head gasket failure ******ed the cat - lambda was on its way out from last MOT results

So Basically I want to find out what is causing the check engine light ( fault codes)

Can a too small a catalyst cause this? how big are genuine rover CATs for this model?

Best wishes from Dr B and "Steve Metal" the 416 GSi

can you not peel back the passener carpet and count the flashes and then match to the fault code.

My money is on that o2 sensor - once it has wamed up and is out of default and you go above 3.5k revs it will set it off - same happened to my old coupe with a cheap o2 sensor.

Can you expand on this carpet lifting business, is there a flashing light on a Honda ECU under that there carpet? got any photos telling me what to do [ my mini 1275GT doesn't do carpets or anything more sophisticated than the rev counter :) ]

found the ecu and.....

I think it is nestling under a complex pressed metal plate under the passenger footwell carpet - a red led is flashing thru a hole in this plate at 1 -1.5 second intervals with the ignition on - no obvious rapid flashing sequence then a gap ... is this an error code? or is turning the ignition back on clearing the flash oe on the ECU?

http://www.jdmcivic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38555

1 - Oxygen Sensor "A" (Primary)
2 - Oxygen Sensor "B" (Secondary)
3 - MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure)
4 - CKP Sensor (Crankshaft Position Sensor)
5 - MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) Mechanical Problem
6 - ECT Sensor (Engine Coolant Temperature)

etc etc

I presume I only have one oxygen ( lambda) sensor????

thus a repeated single flash at one second intervals is Oxygen Sensor "A" (Primary)...

Just checked- the flash lasts for as long as it takes for you to say "on" and stays off for approximately as long as it takes you to say "on" five to seven times..... taking the car to the garage for them to check the wires and disconnect the battery to reset the flishy-flasher on the ECU :)

Update on Lambda Issue..... sorted by Express MOT

Ok, having emailled the garage the night before with the whole story (the lambda was replaced with the Cat ( cat was toasted by the antifreeze in the leaking coolant when the headgasket went ) engine light came on first a week or so ago) ..... The garage got a lambda in over night and when i went in yesterday at 8am it was swapped over on warranty - NO IFS OR BUTS - the car was put on the MOT tester and run up to confirm the gases were ok (and that the cat had not been toasted by any over fueling caused by the lambda fault) , real shame the car was not run up
before the new lambda BUT hey - cost to me ZERO and a replacement lambda fitted - runs sweeter and no annoying engine lights or fault codes

The garage could only find a Rover style Diagnostic plug (Q: is there a honda style one in parallel?) I found but they didn't have a plug for this for their code reader - not really needed as they had the flash codes listed and agreed with my CODE 1 interpretation

Engine was run up on MOT gas tester AFTER battery disconnected - ECU flasher reset to a single blip on ignition on..... cat/lambda "came up" after a minute or two - guess ignition map might be learned?

NB: The Subaru Type RA I had once reset like this as it used to limit the 'maximum map' when it 'knocked' on 95RON fuel ( it was jap spec 97RON luckily not 100RON) and didn't 'come up' unless you pulled the battery lead off - am I assuming too much complexity from the HONDA system here - Q: does my car even have a knock sensor?

It was ALWAYS my intention to name and praise or name and shame (if the garage did diddly) BUT they delivered the goods AGAIN which ADDS to the good service already had from them so here is a recommendation to go to: http://www.expressmot.co.uk/ Express MOT, 11 Endle Street,Southampton, SO14 5FZ , 023 8063 3200 email: info-at-expressmot.co.uk (not sure if this forum posted un-obfusicated mailto: tags)

code reader for rover mini

Hi
Good day to you.

Am from Sri Lanka?
I have a ROVER MINI 1996 in Sri Lanka which I need to diagnose some problems. I would really appreciate if you can help me find the appropriate 3 pin connector to diagnose the engine problems. Please get back to me with the information...
I would also appreciate if you can send me the mini diagnostic diagram or a correct code reader with a 3 pin connector or any information about it.
Thanks.
