Exhaust fumes running lean?

1246 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  tomtomtom1230
As I said in the title, my exhaust fumes are running really lean (smells strong of fuel) when I've got a cone filter attached - any way around this?

I drive a '99 Rover 214-IS 16v :)

Not sure if this is in the right category - sorry, I'm pretty new.

Indeed its in the right forum.

I would look at the coolant temp sensor first.

However I dont think it will make much diffrence. How many miles do you get out of a full tank of fuel.
If I don't drive like a maniac, I can get a good 190 - 210 miles out of each tank so it's not eating up fuel too dramatically :(

200 miles out of one tank!!! OMG! I thought mine mpg was poor getting 375!
Well I can manage 200 miles at a minimum, depends on the distance driven really. I got to Cornwall which was some way away on 3/4 and I worked consumption to be at 40MPG.

I have a lot of roads to open it out on :p
I get about 225miles out of a full tank with standard air box on it - i bought it not long ago.

could this be an underlying problem then?
I would deffo change the coolant temp sensor. You should see 270-300 easily from a full tank on mixed driving.

I know the guage is rubbish and has alot of reserve on it but thats far to low.
Thanks guys, all it'll cost me is a tenner - i'll post back on here if it doesn't work to see other suggestions perhaps :)

I'd love to get that, I get maybe 260 on a good tank. my old 214 8v does about 210 to a tank, always has, emissions are clean as anything as well.
Your guage must be out. Can easily get 250 with no problems. It all depends on how you drive and the type of driving. If your doing loads of city driving it will drop. But if you do plenty of motorway then it should be easy to achive that figure.

Alot is down to the poor guage and how low you dare take it. Even when its near empty there is a good few liters left in the tank.
Just wondering but could the fact that I have a cone filter (with a very crude cool air feed - looking into getting a better one, probably fix up one with some mesh, flexi piping and an unused fog lamp :)) be the cause of my rich fumes at all? my engine temp doesnt go up, in fact it runs about 1/8 cooler with the cone filter.

edit: actually I scratched the fog lamp idea - too much risk of water getting into the throttle body.
gotta run - will check back tomorrow night - thanks for all your help guys. :)
