Electrical Gremlins

Hi,

I am having an attack of the gremlins and was wondering if anybody could help.

The symptoms:

a) 3 times in the last week, when I have turned the engine off the display containing mileage, mode of drive (it's an Auto) external temperature ect has remained on, - Nothing turns it off.

b) The IPK (Computer display) misbehaves, usually on starting it works perfectly, the display for example an open door then drifts to the right or left, the words fairly unreadable, - occasionaly I just get a dim red line across the thing or it doesnt work at all. - However on the next trip it starts as it should. Once when driving it flashed on wth the red line.

c) There is an intermittant but regular static beat on all channels on the radio, for some miles it seems OK, then it starts over, - occasionaly there is a squeak when turning it off or on.

d) 3 times I have disconnected the battery for 10 mins or so, everything returns to normal - but only for a while.

e) My plenums are bone dry and have been for a long time - I even found a spider had made a home in there.

f) In all other respects everything else seems fine - all toys work.

Could it be that the battery is on the way out? - The car starts and runs perfectly, on another vehicle I owned battery problems caused issues with the ABS, - I wouldnt have known.

I would appreciate the advice of the forum members as to what to do, I dont want to go replacing parts one by one until everything is resolved.

Hi,

Yep, thank, I am a little concerned,

All was OK until a couple of weeks ago, I am doing a lot of short journeys at the moment, wondered if that could be related. The ECU hasnt been flooded in my time - 18 months or so, I think it needs an expert which isnt me , I wondered if it could be the IPK - but generally they fail or they dont I believe or maybe some sort of spike on the Canbus, I have a feeling that my local MG garage might have a car coming their way.

Problems Solved ( I hope)

Hi,

After several weeks of frustration yesterday I took the car to TS Auto's (Terry) in Stourbridge, - It was quite a journey (100 miles plus each way) but well worth it. I had previously discussed this with Kelvin (another member and it seemed like a good plan.

Earlier I had the earths in the A pillars cleaned, - while also a good plan it didnt solve the problem

Terry was able to identify that the middle wire on the plug which goes into the coil on the middle front cylinder had snapped right where the wire joins the plug. He didnt have a replacement plug and neither did his parts supplier however he was carefully able to pull the plug apart and attach the wire to the pin - Terry pointed out that in the factory they would have used special tools and would probably have put in a new engine harness, the other 2 wires where fine, also this wire was likely an earth.

One of the wires on the left hand cylinder had been chafed through to the metal by the cooling pipe braket above.

Ideally I need either some of these plugs that can be spliced in or a replacement engine wiring harness - these are not made any more, can anybody help? , I need the later model with the smaller coils from a breaker.

I just cannot believe that one broken small black wire could cause so much agro !.

Other things - Thermostat weeping, - Plan to replace that next, the clunk underneath is the exhaust hitting the tie bar, - plan to wait until it fails and replace with stainless, the battery is too small and non-standard, - will wait until it fails and replace with the correct model. A number of pipes where not plugged in to the correct holes and one of the breathers was broken which Terry replaced.

Both VIS motors where oily and had failed as seen on T4 - both replaced with refurb parts - Mr Edd I think.

This morning - Terry reset everytihing even the Service indictor has gone back to 15 K - not a concern.

The radio was fine with no interference, the IPK display as it should be and the mileage display turned off with the car, plus the car drives better and even fuel consumption appears to be improved, Needs checking.

I can only add my recommendation for Terry at TS Auto's - he did a fine job and also to member Kelvin for advice.

Not only a result but a good show yet again from Terry. The man is a gentleman. Well worth the drive to his place. I always leave feeling confident that I have had the best advise and service these cars deserve.

Hope this VIS's work out. Plenty more where they came from.
