ecu problem?

2186 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  graphic
6 days since I am the proud owner of a 420 diesel from 1998. Unfortunately he did not do anything this afternoon....

I had a trailer on my Rover. Apparently this trailer caused a short circuit on the indicators. A fuse (I put a slightly heavier back, 20 instead of 10, dumb, dumb, dumb, probably) and then drove back. After I shut down the engine, he never started agian.

The situation at the moment:

- Everything works except:
- Starter
- Fuelpomp
- Dashboard indicator lights (battery light only when I want to start the engine).
- Flashing left and right (flashers do so well)

A couple of questions:

- Is this probably due to a broken / blown ECU?
- Can I replace it myself?
- Will i have some problems with my remote (which still just works, both alarm and open/close doors)

I hope someone with some experience ...

Thanks in advance!

If anything you could have bown a fuse link under the bonnet. Also you could have blown a relay which is stopping the starter motor etc.

I doubt you will have done any majour damage to the ECU.

I would check all the fuses under the bonet and under the steering wheel and then check the relays. Any relays you can change with another to test them I would and then least you can rule it out.
Thanks for your quick respons!

We checked al the fuses on both places and there are all ok. I just checked also the relay near the ecu, and that relay works fine.

When we put some power on the enginepump, and the starter, the motor will run. But without indicators as speed, tempeture etc in the dashboard.

When we connect a computer to the ecu, it seems the ecu is out of power and the signal is dead. Is there a way to double check if the ecu is the problem?

Thanks again!
try earthing the body of the ecu to the bodywork. its been known for the earth wire inside the ecu to burn out but its usually when jumpstarting that happens
It still sounds like a broken fuse link under the bonnet, check the ones in the fusebox and the ones on the left inner wing with a test lamp or meter. (Sometimes they "look" ok when they are not)

Thanks, Like the picture below? Nothing happens :-(

Thanks, We test both of the fuseboxes with a meter and found no problems :(

Thanks! I tried as you can see on this picture:

Is that ok? Nothing happens :-(.
Try following the feed into and out of the ignition switch as you turn the key?

Thanks, I already replied with a foto, but the moderator must aprove this reply...

Sorry, I do not understand you. What do you mean by 'following the feed into and out of the ingition swicht?

Thanks again!
The multiplug for the ignition switch should have a permanent live to it and should be connected to the other terminals as you move the key.
As a long shot it could be the loom that runs down the right hand side of the rad at the front of the car. If its chafed then you get a similiar issues to what you have.
I started this weekend with measuring everything. After the battery has been known for some time off, something changed. I now have some lights on the dashboard. So now the check engine light and glowlight (it is a diesel) both are on. The problem is that they are on all the time, even when I pull out the key.

Could it be possibly the relay module, which is placed rear the ECM in the engine compartment? Or is it a blown ECM? Or maybe the wires? Anyone on how to check this?

Thanks a lot, again!

When you read my previous post, it can be stil this problem? Can you explain to me what excatly a "loom" is and where I can find it?

Thank a lot for helping me out here, I appreciate it!
A "loom" is all the wires taped together. Sejin's post is a very good place to look as you have all the right symptoms for it to be damaged wiring
