I'm pretty sure you must be to be honest.

I do know of a Tomcat that is rallied its a converted cup car. This was done before with a few cars, as a spin off from the Tomcat series and the GTi series, which I believe your car must be from.

It is fairly cheap to run ..... but none of it is standard now ... so bits are hard ..

.... it was built by Tony Pond Motorsport in 1992, (I have original drawings), as a stage rally car, get the impression that Rover wanted to get into the F2 category as was at the time and compete with Ford et al ... have correspondence in my file suggesting the Rover/Pond relationship was not a happy one and the idea got canned .... my car did the 1994 RAC driven by a Norwegian, (whose name escapes me) and failed to finish.

Since then it has been rebuilt by its previous owner, (to massive cost) and he did 2 rallies in it ....

.. I have done both forest and tarmac rallies and it is superb ....

... and it has still only done 3200 miles!!!

Last time out I crashed, so bought a white 220 gti of ebay and scrapped it for parts so now it has original front and rear end .. ..will post full spec below.

just spotted on ebay tony pond 220 rally car !

Not sure where to put this but I wondered if anybody else rallied a Rover car ....

.... I currently run a Rover 220 Gti Stage Rally Car (ex works) .... and was curious to know if I was alone ????

Pic of mine below ....

I just happened to spot this glorious beast on ebay: with a by it now price of £3,700 in county durham

for the record, I've pasted the text of the ad here; as obviously it will go before long:
I unexpectley have to resell this cracking little rally car.I only bought it from e-bay a few months ago.It has to go due to an other rally car and a car in build, you can only have so much!!!!.(Yes Dear!!!)
This car comes with not only exellent spec but loads of history. It was originally built by The late great TONY POND.I didn't even know he had a race and rally car preperation company. As the story goes,he was comissioned to built 6 of these cars for a championship back in the early nineties.I have faxes to and from him to Rover.one of the faxes questions why the bill was £153,000,when they were quoted £126,000!!!!!!! WHAT????,that was just for phase 1!!!.Anyway theres loads of stuff like that, inc the original(blue prints) drawings of the conrods etc.
These cars were built to GP N spec for a challange, and this one is believed to have competed on the 1992 RAC,under the Rover Works banner!!.Since then it has changed a few hands and had this added on like the fabulous engine and fantasic box.Allthough it has only done approx 20 rallies,(gravel and tarmac) it still has only 3,300(approx) on the clock, this original!!!!.
The car is a PROPER RALLY CAR so dont expect it to be mint condition and as straight as a die,but it is very good condition, very straight and very strong!!.It had,had a full under car respray 2 rallies ago,and 2 new bumpers fitted. The paint work is very good and in my opinian does'nt need a respray(and I'm picky). The inside is clean and tidy,as you can see it still has the carpets in and has a head cloth,so chuck a back seat in and you have your self a very competitive road rally car!!.
SHELL : Fully seam welded and strengthened.Tarcle T45 multi point welded in cage, this goes all over the car, diagonal + double diagonals, seam welded to the A post and the B post.
ENGINE : 2ltr,16v, Balanced Billet steel crank, balanced steel rods,Cosworth pistons, strengthened steel block.H/P oil pump.Skimmed and gas flowed head, preped for big valves,Large BDA style exhaust and inlet valves.New collets, double valve springs, solid lifters,Rally cams.Although not recent,i have bills for nearly £800 for the head work alone!!.Bespoke breather system,DIS ingnition system,DTA engine management. As new Tony Law Manifold and full exhaust system. There is Dino print out of 200BHP,before the Tony Law system was fitted,so you would expect an extra 8-10bhp.
GEARBOX : QUAIFFE,gear kit,straight cut,ultra close ratio(THIS IS MINT).1st gear,2.615/2nd gear,1.937/3rd gear,1.55/4th gear,1,273/5th gear,1.043.CWP 4:462.Gripper [email protected] 8000 rpm = 120mph.Paddle clutch plate,comp.cover.
SUSPENSION : Gartrac 2 & 1/4s all round, with bilstien adjustable inserts(THESE ARE FROM A MK11 ESCORT),front 270/140,rear 300/120.3 degrees negitive camber on the front,2-3mm tow in on the rear,Steel Pillow ball top mounts on the front struts.Superflex bushes.
BRAKES : Standard set up,Drilled and groved discs on the front with nearly new Mintex pads, standard on the rear with comp pads.Fully areo quipped.
INSIDE : 2 x Very good Motordrive side mounted seats.Brand new 3" TRS harnesess,Alloy navigators foot rest.built in fire extinguisher system and hand held,All aero quipp fuel lines,Alloy H/D hand brake.
GENERALL: Alloy full size sump guard, plasic tank guard.Comes on 4 Rover alloys with good Dunlop tyres + 1 Dunlop in the boot.2 BRAND NEW Yokohama's,and 4 standard alloys with road tyres on.Comes with a good spares package,AND an up to date MSA log book.Lots of MOT.This car could rally tomorrow!!!!.
The BUY IT NOW PRICE is only £3700.Lets face it you could'nt but the gearbox for that.If you don't like the car,the Engine would go into a pucker MK11 or even a kit car.But the car pulls like a train and revs freely, handles like a Subaru and jumps loverly,so why Knack a good ready to use car.Theres loads of other stuff I was going to do,eg,you could get at least 10 stone out of it.It could do with the battery shifting into the back and a nice cold box fitting cold air intake, which will give at least an other 5-8bhp.
I will answer SENSIBLE QUESTIONS ONLY.Dont be E-BAY DICK HEADS.YOU BID TO BUY NOT TO LOOK.Feel free to call me on 0777 911 3670.All the best.Phil

should you read this soon after posting the ebay reference is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROVER-220-GTI-RALLY-CAR_W0QQitemZ180178673985QQihZ008QQcategoryZ18262QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
timed to end 17-Nov-07 13:00:00 GMT
and the car is in County Durham currently...

so there's a bit more history on the car !

It's definately the same one as the number plate is visible in the pictures.

Which I had some spare cash and time; this looks such a hoot.

Went to the Wyedean Rally in the Forest of Dean Gloucestershire this year and saw loads of MG ZR's.

Never seen a Early 200 rally car! Looks good though. M-series is a rare beast now!
