Do you genuinely enjoy motoring?

If I were to go for a drive right now then either congestion, speed cameras, moronic driving, potholes or the cost of filling up would probably annoy me. My question is, do you ever genuinely, deep down enjoy a drive, or is it really just an unfulfilled fantasy? Yunno, the vision of cruising down route 66 with a leggy blonde in an open top caddy or racing around the alps in a lotus esprit... and in reality you end up sitting behind vectra in a 2hr jam on the M4 with an empty GRRR sodding buslane beside you GRRR!

Are we mad for being interested in cars at all?

When buying my last car, I had a rare moment of sanity by figuring I'd enjoy the money more on things other than motoring but I keep thinking "hmm I'd like a *insert ridiculous gas guzzler here*!

Sorry if this is a bit depressing!

Off to invest in beer...

Well, I've let go the sensibility option by saving my money. I'm 21, single, and know I won't at least won't be serious about buying a house until I'm at least 24/25. I love driving wherever I am. This is why I bought the ZR over other boring, dull, common motors. I'm now considering a serious hot hatch (Cooper S or Focus ST). Life's too short and I love the thrill off chasing the endless countryside roads and knowing what I'm driving is a masterpiece of human creation.

/geeky and intelligent hat off

Simply, I was lucky to have the ability to drive with my Asperger's and appreciate it greatly (after painful months of public transport).

I love it. I stay in the middle of rural Lanarkshire, with no speed cameras, no congestion, no trouble parking and some of the finest twisty national speed limit roads in the country. If you drive a mahoosive 4x4 no-one criticises you for it because you live in the middle of nowhere, if you drive an Evo you can, ahem, 'enjoy' it's abilities without the rozzers banging you up.

Only time I need to take to 'normal' roads is down the M8 to work, and since I work shifts I never get stuck in traffic.

Cars and driving, I LOVE IT :D

Most of my driving is longish distances these days, as I cycle to work and back so can go whole weeks without sitting in my car.

So, compared to my push bike and "me" power it's a hell of a lot faster :) , and when I do go out in it it's not just the "to the shops" variety so I do enjoy it.

My last drive was up to see a mate in Huntingdon, and the route I take is cross country and via the Milton Keynes bypass bit - dual carriageways, national speed limit punctuated with lots of roundabouts to have fun on.:rocker:

I enjoy it, but the enjoyment is getting to be less and less due to congestion. There's really no such thing as backroads anymore, every road is clogged, and in the middle of the day too, not just rush hour.

I imagine it must be much more fun out west in places like Forest or Cameron counties, where the population is still well under 10,000 and there aren't any traffic lights to speak of. Of course, there are probably more than a few drawbacks to living in areas so far from population centers.

Hmm well I'm surrounded by scameras, speedbumps and buses that try to ruin the experience as much as possible but at the end of the day it's the most enjoyable way to get from A to B (or in my case go nowhere at all just drive aimlessly lol)

Have to say driving in unfamiliar areas isn't pleasant for me at all, too worried about sneaky scameras these days and spend more time lookin at the speedo than the road tbh :(

Won't get me out me motors no matter what GreedyGordon the Highway Robber (TM) tries to do!!!

i still enjoy motoring, its just all the other people out there who don't enjoy it, everyone is in such a rush these days there is no commeradery between motorists.

A trip to Corsica last summer reminded me of my passion for driving. Twistsy roads used for rallying, were very special.... even in a poxy 1.4 Clio

i like driving at night but i hate driving in the day. the roads are too mad and lots beeing 3-4 lanes in town jamed full of traffic its not enjoyable i would rather get the tram into town.

on the other hand the big ring roads round lakeside shopping center are basicaly turned into a racetrack every saterday night with lots of people "testing" there cars. thats the kind of driving i enjoy not sitting behind a bus, during normal driving my car just becomes a mode of transport but on the right roads its a weapon!

Yes. There are occassions when I don't but there are also occassion when I thoroughly do. Most of the time I just don't mind it.

It is possible, in the right place time and car - even in the UK - to still really enjoy driving but a lot of my recent really enjoyable drives have, sadly, been outside the UK. In general I find European motoring more enjoyable particularly in France and some parts of Germany (a lot of Germany's roads are as badly congested as ours) and even in some parts of America. There are some fantastic drives to be found in California for example.
