.......I have found you .org gang?

We have discussed warrantees 'til we are blue in the face, but it strikes me that they only cover what they want to cover at the end of the day. ie: not wear and tear, but break down stuff.

I don't know the difference between a head gasket and a tail gasket, but I now know of a few folks who do. :grouphug:

I have to decide in the next 4 months whether to purcahse or not. But methinks if I take all advice offered here I could have future trouble free driving??!!

Am I kidding myself?:err:

Hi Vixie,

I think you should seriously consider buying one if your car isn't as old. It depends on how much it is I would say.

On the other hand if you have really a big damage (with high costs) and it is covered you have done well.

Nobody knows what's happening with the car in the future.....

Good luck making your right decision :)

All the best advice in the world is no good if you have no one to do the work!!!.

Perhaps just go for the AA/RAC mechanical cover as a minimum, IIRC its only around ÂŁ50 PA, and pays upto ÂŁ500 per claim ( Max 3 per year), At least this would go a lot of the way to paying for a HGF, which is about the worst case scenario!!.

Thanks - it's just ÂŁ300 I do without spending at the moment.. and everyone on here, who has bought one, has been disappointed!! You have to buy before the car is 3 years old....

Ps. The mosquitos in the UK tend to be little things (still bit though), not like continental ones, by the way!

Nevertheless *ouuuuuuuutsh* hihi, is that an invitation ;)

Other question: is the guarantee you'll thinking of a substitution of the original MG-Rover one ?
Errr, invitation? To bite? I thought it was information!

Yes, it would be as a replacement for the MG-Rover one.

PS. Marl is right though, it is all about getting the jobs done at the end of the day.

Oh, I thought I would buy max 3 years, did not know you could pay just ÂŁ50 a year...
The problem (my interpretation of the small print so I maybe wrong) with the AA/RAC mechanical cover is that you have to breakdown and AA/RAC can’t fix the problem. So if your car was being serviced and they found that you head gasket was failing then that would not be covered.

For me it is stuff the warranty companies. I will put my money into good and regualr servicing (Mike Satur for the Tf, and Nationwide Auto Centres for the ZT - I will provide the MGR parts in the case of NAC).

Both my cars are less than 1 year old but 20 + years of driving tell me that engines don't explode and gearboxes don't fall out if you treat it as it was intended. Check your fluid levels, be aware of unusual noises and have them attended to as needed. AA/RAC cover is worthwhile though, a tow off the motorway costs much more than the cost of breakdown cover (50% off for MGR ownerws with the AA - and 10% of servicing at nationwide auto centres, plus repairs by them are discounted if they would have been covered by the MGR warranty).

That is my stand, one I may regret or applaud depending on my personal future fortune with these cars.

Your right Chris!!.

But at least its *Some* cover, and not that bad for ÂŁ50!!.

The other alternative (the one I chose 2 years ago when I got my `F`), is Stick ÂŁ500 in a half decent interest account and forget about it!!!..

Rainy days etc!!!.

The way I see it is that Im already paying through the nose for car insurance, ok this only covers me for driving the car, but why pay more just incase you may break down. I think I might think differently if I wasnt interested in getting my hands dirty, but I actually quite enjoy that side of car ownership. As other folk have said, its perhaps more wise to put the money in a bank account.

My HGF was a proper spectacular one, ended up costing over a grand to sort.

The AA coughed up their 500-quid no questions, even though the garage had gone ahead and done the work before thier assessor saw the car (strict no no apparently) - and they full lifted the car home in the evening and then picked it up in the morning again to take to the garage (which was not part of my cover), and they even sorted me a free hire car (crap*y bright yellow smart, but nobodys perfect!)

here's my take on it. A warrenty is a 'just in case' insurance, it will cost approx ÂŁ500 for decent cover, whats the worst case senario - HGF, average fix cost maybe ÂŁ500 if its a straight forward jobbie. My TF is the third K series engined car I've had and no HGF *touches wood*. Its a no brainer for me - no warranty cover, if sh!t happens, I'll deal with it then, I'm just not prepared to shell out for something that 'may' happen, I could afford the cover, I just choose not to have it.

A refreshing post Pete!!.

Think people tend to forget in this `blame culture` we live in nowadays that as you say "**** happens".......... its life!!!!.

If the car is new-ish, I would go for a warranty. The terms are pretty tight, but is does cover head gasket failure so long as it occurs under circumstances where you were not negligent in the care of the car's fluids. The head gasket thing will break your heart if it happens, and I can tell you that EVERY K-series engine that my friends/colleagues have has had a HG failure and this includes three F/TFs.

The peeps here can help with diagnosis and can help with tips to minimise garage costs, but we are not as good as an insurance company when it comes to fixing big stuff that lets go (although, granted, some insurerers are not that good at that either).

Nige.

I'm with Pete on this...and like Paula, I have no warranty and my baby is just a year old now. If it happens, it happens....We have had HGF on a Discovery after relatively few miles - a huge bill followed. But I still don't see the point of paying out ÂŁ500 on a warranty I may never need.

Guess I like to live on the edge....I have no life insurance either!!!

you mentioned you know some people who know about cars...well Vix heres my take on it....I havent bothered with a warrenty as I have two mechanics as mates, and I can do pretty much anything on a car so why bother?as all I have to do is buy some mates a few beers plus the cost of the parts.

Thats assuming something DOES go wrong and so far not a single tiny niggle.touches wood.sorry,I must stop doing that:shake:

I've got a warranty with my car, one which came with the car when I bought it, which lasts for three years. Still got a while to wait before it finishes though. I think i'll get close to the time and maybe leave the warranty and keep about ÂŁ700 in an account incase the worst happens!

I know we all manage to find problems which need fixing on new cars but surely cars become more unreliable as they get older and that's when you might need to think about buying a warranty.

As for buying one: I wouldn't. As I pointed out in a previous thread, warranty companies exist to make a profit. You pay whatever for the warranty and, on average, they pay out much, much less than whatever.
