Different engines noises between 1992 and 1994 414i 16v

Hi there,

A few weeks ago I bought a 1992 Rover 414 SLi and its been great. However it didn't have power steering so my girlfriend couldn't drive it. A 1994 414 SLi then came up with the neccessary power steering so I've bought that too.

My question is, the two cars have very different engine noises. The 1992 is nice and quiet when revved and driven but the 1994 has a sort of high pitched whine that is there all the time and increases when revved. It does it both in gear and declutched. Both have similar milages (48k on the 1992 and 57k on the 1994) and I was wondering if this noise is something to be worried about? Is it related to the fact the 1994 car has power steering?

I'm asking as I'm now deciding which one to keep!

Cheers for any help,

Chris

Two things strike me here the '92 will be SPI single point injection and there for no ticking of the injectors. The '94 should be MPI multi point injected and have the ticking of the injectors so that count for some noise.

Maybe just down to the timming belt being abit tight.

Other way round surely . I used to own an Spi 214 and the injector was quite noisy (constant ticking sound)

The noise from the gearbox is not part of the question here.

This is most likely belt noise.

I agree. It does seem more of a belt thing. If one of them is a bit too tight is it going to cause problems if i keep driving it? Which belt is the likely candidate?

Chris

P.S. Both cars are MPi, out of interest.

I would go with the cambelt being the noise maker. If you dont know the history of the car and when it was last changed it could be worth doing.

You could rule out the drive belts if you like by spraying them with ( cant remember what it called minds gone blank lets call it belt spray) somebody will put me right. DO NOT USE IT ON THE CAMBELT.
