Guys,

Some of you may know, that I have recently got a 2nd head to use instead of replacing some bent valves in my head. However, the head I got from the wrecker has smaller inlet ports than the ones on my current head. I've just made a call to the guys at the wreckers, who have assured me that despite the difference in size of the inlet ports, the power will not be affected.

Can this be true? It seems to defy logic?

To be fair, they've offered me my money back if im not convinced, but I thought I'd check and see what everybody thought about the effect of differing port sizes first.

Thanks guys.

Sorry, the head itself is the same size.... poor explanation on my part!

Its the inlet ports that are different. Mine is a 1.6 16v head and it has visually larger ports than what the ports on the 2nd hand head are.

I have been pointed to this before...

which makes me think the 2nd head is from an early 1.4

Surely this smaller port size will restrict the flow of fuel/air into the combustion chamber?

if its a 1.4 head then take it back its wrong, the cylinder bores are a different size and wont match up.

sounds like a 1.4 head to me, take it back

where di you get the head from?? the main yard in doncaster?? theres a rover specialist breaker at carlton industrial park barnsley, or theres rawmarsh vehicle dismantlers they have a few 200's in might be worth a call

Yes it did. Earlier cars had smaller inlet ports. I think these will be from the early SPI cars. I've no idea if the power will be affected, but if I were you I'd be asking for one with the later larger ports. There is an excellent article on porting K series heads somewhere that details the differences and basically says not to bother trying to port the smaller port head. I can't find it at the moment though. I think one was called low-port and the other high port but I could be wrong on that.

Yup thats the one. :D
Sorry the post was a bit late.
Check the part number and if it matches the earlier one then ask them for an exchange part. Perhaps print out and take the above article with you to show them as proof of the difference.

All the heads are the same for 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 non VVC.

1.4 SPFi had a low flow head, which will not give you the same power when used with MPFi, and could give other problems so take it back.
