it sounds as though you have got air in the clutch hydraulic system.

I am not sure if the 400 has got the same plastic clutch parts as the later 45\ZS, but it is pretty much a sealed system - there is a way to bleed it, but it is not that easy. (have s search on here or on xpf for a thread by sheddist)

Mine did the same thing, but had popped a sseal, so once the clutch went to the floor, no more clutch. For yours to slip it means that you are wearing your clutch as it has not re-engaged properly.
Almost certainly a seized, or in the process of seizing, release shaft. If you don't deal with it pronto your clutch hydraulics will die (£110) This is not guesswork, this is exactly what happened to mine.
This happened to mine and it turned out I needed a new master and slave cylinder
This is a very common complaint, mines slowly on it's way out aswell. Difficult to get in 1st gear and bites near the floor sometimes
well after towing the car my mechanic for a better look they checked the clutch master cylinder and found that it was in good condition. but it the cylinder thingy that sits in front of the gearbox that has seized. so after a good cleaning the pedal does work but damage to the clutch has been done so its gearbox out and 800 euros for a new clutch kit and labour :sad3:

cheers

I'd start a new thread mate, you're more likely to get decent responses if you do as people are likely to read the original post and miss this completely.
