Damsel in distress! Engine Management Light

Hi, hope you can help me. I have just brought a P reg Rover 420 diesel and am having some issues with it. Whilst it’s mainly in 1st and 2nd gear, it seems to rev high between 2000-3000 rev’s which I feel may be a little high for a diesel (but this is my first rover so giving it the benefit of the doubt). However, whist it’s in these gears it also ‘jolts back’ and looses revs, it seems to drive better in all other gears.
Also intermittently the engine management light keeps flashing on and off, it doesn’t appear to stay on full time.
Today I have put some Redex into the engine to see if this help clear the fuel system, however the engine light still flashes on and off. Has anybody got any ideas what this could be before I have it diagnosed?

If you mean it goes that high when accelerating in 1st and second, then that'd be normal. It shouldn't idle that high, however engine damage will not occur below 4200 (the engine's redline).

For the engine management light, what i'd be tempted to do is check the injector needle lift sensor connection to the leftmost injector, (make sure the plug is clean and tight), check the connector behind the injector pump on the front right hand side of the engine (same procedure) and see if that helps.

Otherwise i'd suspect the timing might be ever so slightly out, but could just be a dodgy connection.
