Cutting out when slowing for corners

Hi there, Does anyone have any advice on my 2001 Rover 25 1.4 ADVANTAGE S, which whenever i come up to a corner or slowing for lights the car just dies and the only way i can get it going again is by starting it like normal, using the starter motor like you would first time you start it. Does anyone have any advice to how i can fix this?, also i cannot get it below 2000rpm in gear when slowing without it stuttering and jerking everyone about, is this normal or just me :) ?
The car has 94k on the clock just to let you know.
Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks :).

It was last serviced in 07 before i had it. when i bought it, it was from some one who took it as part ex and then i bought it after so i think it wasn't being used for a while but the previous owner before that kept it serviced. i will get the HT lead checked in the morning.

fuel consumption is, well it went through ÂŁ20's worth in around 70-80miles, start up it tends to start low revs increace to around 1200rmp then is up and down for like a few mins unless you give it a bit of throttle then it will calm down, but then when you get into reverse it just wants to die unless you give it some(more then normal), when knocking it out of gear it tends to be ok unless you are ether braking hard or turning then it will just die and when you are half way through a turn and the power steering goes it's not a fun experiance.

this may not be the cause but i would suggest altering your idle as it seems only to be cutting out when putting a load on the engine ie turning will place a load on the engine via power steering pumps etc.....i had a similar problem a while ago and this resolved my problem.

Since Vivalarichy didn't mention it, the stepper motor reset procedure is as follows:

-Turn the ignition to position 2 (but don't start the engine)
-Fully depress the accelerator 5 times
-Turn the ignition to position 0 (fully off)
-Wait 20 secs
-Start the engine as normal

You might have to let it idle for a minute or so before it settles down. Of course, the above assumes that a) your stepper motor is at fault and b) it's just been knocked slightly off, rather than totally buggering.

70-80 miles to the ÂŁ20 seems a bit low, but it's a bit hard to check without precisely measuring your fuel consumption (by that I mean brimming your tank, driving about, and brimming it again, thus making sure that you know exactly how much fuel has been used). That could be due to a faulty sensor, but I don't think that would cause the cutting out.

The car could just need a service. Has anything been changed since its last service, such as spark plugs, oil, etc?

hi sorry about the fuel bit i got a bit mixed up, it can do around 180m on ÂŁ20, oops. I've tried the ideas suggested and all seems well, i'll try and get in for a service as soon as possible. Another problem tho, i have found at around 2000RPM it tends to stutter and struggle but above and below that it's fine, is this just because it needs a service or another problem?. thanks again for the info :)
