How to Repair my Cup Holder?

I got my cupholder of Dragos yesterday... (the broken one not the one he wanted to swap)

So... Here's a challenge for you...

My new cup holder is broken; well actually the pop out function is not working. or to be more precise the mechanism that holds the cup holder inside the dash is not working and so it keeps popping out when you don't want it to pop out.

Below is a series of pictures outlining what the problem is and I am hoping you guys can help me fix it.

It looks like a very delicate job to fix it but I am sure there is enough expertise in this forum that can help me resolve it. There is a reward for the one who comes up with a solution... But that is a surprise trophy. :trophy:

When the holder is out of the dash it looks like this...

What amazes me is that someone sat down and designed this mechanism which on the face of it looks a bit OTT when you consider it is only a cup holder.

That part that operates the open and close mechanism is illustrated by the red arrow here...

This when working properly makes a hook type lever to move up and down

Up

Down

The reverse side of the mechanism looks like this

Where the red arrows are, a very small lug fits in there and moves back and forth like a key and eventually hooking in behind what looks like an inverted letter "C". On pressing the front of the cup holder in the dash this causes the lug to disengage from the inverted "C" allowing the cup holder to spring out of the compartment. The cup grips then open allowing the driver to pop his cup into the holder. (Unless it is arse-less - nudge nudge Flyer <Grin>)

Now lets take a look at where the lug is supposed to be...
On the part of the holder that pops out is a section that is prone to break...

Close up of it...

The lug is supposed to be on here...

Close up again...

The lug is missing from here...

What I have to do is make another lug and fit it in place. It has to be strong enough to hold the cup holder in place by hooking in behind the inverted "C" on the main part of the mechanism.

To give you an idea of the sizes we are dealing with The large metal bar in this picture is the end of a small paperclip.

So the lug has to be very small; I am guessing about 1 millimetre thick by about 3 - 4 millimetres long

What I need to know is how do I make one? and How do I get it to stick to the the body where it belongs? And yet be strong enough to hold the cup holder in when not in use?

Now this is the interesting bit...

Here is a challenge to all you engineers; that is if your up to it...

I have figures out a very simple way of fixing this without any manufacturing or gluing or any fiddling whatsoever.

I challenge you guys to work this out... All the clues are in the pictures.

Are you up for it!!! Can you figure out how to make it work it in the simple way without tossing it out and buying another???

If not then tell me how to fit a new lug to the part where it belongs so that it works... Stays in when closed and not in use.

Oh and BTW It is not an arse-less cup holder, here's proof...

All answers on the back of a postcard and posted to Flyer for his wedding.

Blimey Edd that's some insane detail right there, but I can see that the little bit of plastic is needed...unless you attach a paperclip or something similar along parallel to the cylindrical base that the lug is supposed to be attached to, so that it protrudes enough to catch in the inverted "C". But I can't see this special non fiddling non gluing way lol.
Actually never looked at them in such detail Edd, think I'd be inclined to find a small screw of the correct size and screw it into the plastic - or if you think that'd maybe stress the thin plastic another idea would be to drill a small hole, make a small "lug" out of plastic with a fitting on the end to fit the hole and glue it in.

Cheers
Jim
Oi you, don't show me up with your far better ideas lol.

:wooman:

:getcoat:
What you need is a small diameter roll pin, drill a hole for a frition fit for it
That's what I was thinking too Terry. I have a friend in Stourbridge who built a steam engine to scale from plans. He used to run it around on a track carrying up to 20 people. I think I will take it round to him and ask if he still has the tools to drill it. My hands ain't steady enough and I don't have a drill bit small enough.

But that is not the simple solution... Anyone figured it out yet.... Come on get yer thinking caps on. The answer is in the photos.

Edd
Flyer has one knocking about , I sent him it and he still aint fitted it :twak:

Was that the assless one? I sent him a phone holder too and I don't think he fitted that either.

Can't trust these sporran sniffers hey! :moon::naughty::fishslap:

Edd
He said a while ago he'll bring them along to Elvington so someone can fit it for him as he's scared he'll break it changing the walnut fascia over onto the new one lol

:spanner:
Everything I can think of either needs glue or a drill etc.

Got me stumped Edd
Simon
Keep trying... If none f you can figure it out all will be revealed by tomorrow night.

Edd <has a trophy to give away>
I hate these cryptic threads - make me wanna take the car to bits to find out
How about getting a steel pin of the proper dimensions and heating it ,then push it into the plastic. It would be a tight fit and when the plastic cools it would act as a glue?

Don't think complicated... It's dead simple. All is in the photos. <chortle>

Edd
Nice idea Pat, I think you've gotta be close with that one!

Still involves fiddling or alteration and sticking of some kind though.

Think Edd has either lost it or very clever, i'll let everyone decide for themselves, either that or it is so simple and easy that we are all missing it of course which is usually what happens with the most obvious things.

Closer and closer... Study photos 4, 5, and 6.

Bluetack FTW
Simon

LOL!... Love it I hadn't thought of that one.

Edd
I was thinking maybe swap the spring over, i.e turn it over but all this would do is make it spring inwards instead of outwards lol
