In the Sunday Times today, he tests the one series, BMW not happy with his test on the X3. Clarkson threaten with being barred from the BMW test fleet unless he toed the line!

" So i need to be carful how i say this.......the one series is CRAP!"

He also thinks that it will bring down BMW......:)

Cheers

well Mega, when I read the article in the paper knocking the well-known Nemesis of MGR I was sure I would see it quoted here!

Bit of a Clarkson-type hatchet job too - I paraphrase "when you park it on the drive" your neighbour will think not "blimey he has a lot of money" but "he's spent that much on that! he must be bonkers!"

TBH cost was one of the key reasons I did not consider BMW for long even in Germany - it seemed like the prices quoted to me were in Deutschmarks, not Euros ie they were twice as much as I expected.

but to see you mention this - something that does not knock MGR! it's Christmas is it? season of goodwill even to posters on the mg-rover.org forums? well done!

Brilliant! I really hate the new range of BMWs so I am glad to see that Clarkson has finally had the balls to express what most people think about them.

Clarky does have a point. 20k for a car which is the same size of an Astra with less engine choice... They must be mad.

I'd rather have an Astra VXR for that price!

They do seem to be having a bad spell at the moment.

The 7 Series, 6 Series, Z4, X3 and the 1 Series have all been badly received.

I think they'll have more luck with the forthcoming 3 Series though as they seem to have gone back to basics with it.

Excellent news! The 1 series looks odd, is over priced and can only be considered a family car if your family consists entirely of dwarves.

I did have a good laugh at that, he's right though, it's far too expensive for what basically isn't a very good car & doesn't realy fit any market. Still have a nasty feeling they'll sell bucket loads of the things. The new 3 series is supposed to be quite good though.

Bmw

I actually saw a 1 series in the flesh on Friday and didn;t think it looked as bad as it does in the pictures - still not nice though. Give me a new Astra any day, looks just as expensive and at least as well built

I do think that the new 3-Series will be the saving grace for the Company. As for all their new models, what were they thinking?

A van!? C'mon BMW whats Bangle been bangling on about? You'll be making a Supermini next... Oh sorry, you already have one...:guns4:

Bangle and BMW can't be so wrong. Their cars are bought in impressive numbers. And they make money, real money, truckloads of money...

Is there any other car company around with profits just like them? Okay, Porsche probably.

That makes me feel slightly better for not having an MG any more. Hopefully within a couple of months I'll be taking delivery of a 1.6 Astra Club company car. For the time being I'm lumbered with a Ford Crocus. Nice colour (same as the Moonland colour I chose for the Astra) but I could walk quicker! Mind you for an Avis hire car I was surprised to find electric windows, Air-con and drinks holders (sad I know but it's great not having to wedge a bottle of coke down the side of the seat).

The 1-series will make its way nevertheless. One can already see loads of them here. Until October BMW sold 7,484 1-series cars in Germany.

I've seen loads of 1-series... A more pointless car I have never seen - dreadful space in the rear, dreadful boot space, marketed as a family hatchback. And at a starting price of £16,000 (running up to twice that it seems) it's dreadfully expensive.

Bought by people who must have a brand new Beemer but can't afford a proper one - it'll sell like hotcakes make no mistake, but only for the blue and white badge. As someone has said previously, a turd with a BM badge on it is still a turd. Hell, it can't even go fast enough for someone to make full use of the RWD...

As for the rest of the range, I reserve judgement on the new 3 until I've seen it, but I'm not impressed by anything else so I don't hold out much hope for it. Even the 6, with which they had a great opportunity to replace a diamond-cut classic, is (IMHO) hideous.

I'm devoutly anti-BMW, but I can admit that they have made some pretty good looking cars - last models of 5 and 7 series are a prime example. Beautiful cars, well built, powerful... As for the Z8....

As a closing, I wonder if they'll make an M-Version of the 1series..? One thing's for sure, it won't live up to the M1 name...

They're actually not in great shape financially. Porsche are the most profitable car company.

I think that People are getting bored by BMW, their cars are VERY overpriced and dull. Just think if MG built a nice well made stylish car for 70% of the Bmw price than i can see things going pear shaped for Der-Fatherland:)

As for BMW making tons of cash......er no X4 sales are only 40% of what they thought they get :)

Look at that list, every car in the top ten is from a home manufacturer.

When was the last time MGR had ONE car in the top ten in this country?
