To Clarkson:

No you dumb prick, it's because you and others needlessly slate them rather than jut getting to the point that despite some flaws they are still reasonably good cars. If you want a truly bad interior get into a Seat yet the motoring press don't slate them for that, oh no, instead its more of a little joke "never mind the interior is a bit cheap and nasty, buy it anyway", but with rover its more of a "it doesn't matter that it doesn't rattle, has all the options I want and is comfortable, it looks old therefore is rubbish - don't buy this car whatever you do". Forget old, a lot of the new stuff is so poor I can't see how anybody could think it better - have you had a poke around a Renault Megane Scenic with the electronic dash?? Apart from that little fact it is generally horrible. And staying in category, the Focus C-max is hardly that nice either with definitely cheaper and more horrible plastic and design being used throughout.

I can't think of much worse than a lot of the bad evil people who have existed over time and the things they've done, and although you are far from being among them there is one act which probably rates right up there with them........ the fact that you have spawned off-spring. I find it amazing that you are still given such a large voice in the motoring press and yet you fail in your responsibilities to inform motorists true information about cars such as always describing the Ford Focus as the best thing since sliced bread yet fail to mention that spending an hour in one could seriously effect ones ability to stop feeling pain in their back.

Now boys, question is do I email that to him???

"Second-hand Rover cars fit only for scrap" - Sunday Telegraph

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought the Sunday Telegraph for the first time today (an article concerning a friend is supposed to be in it) and I followed the leading article in the business section about cars dumped on dealers to this piece of wisdom.

"But if Deloitte was proscribed, as it implies, from making explicit what it really thought about the business, then the relevant accounting rules are - like a second-hand Rover car - only fit for scrap."
Business Comment, Robert Peston, City Editor. Robert.Peston@Telegraph.co.uk

A typical example of the stupid sheep-like ill-informed comment that has got us where we are.

Do pass on your considered thoughts on the quality of his journalism to him, the editor and the proprietors, the Barclay Brothers.

Needless to say I won't by buying it again.

I really dont see how the opinions of one man can have that much effect on Rover's demise. Yes he is opinionated and loud, but he is so tabloid no one takes him seriously - thats part of his appeal. He is a shining example of irony. He had some valid points, not least when he reviewed the ZT V8 and said athough he liked the car, he couldnt recommend buying one until Rover could assure the public that they would still be around in 5 years, that the warranty would be honoured, and that there would be some resale value to it. That is quite reasonable to say in a review, although I realise its a paradox because without sales, there is no future for the firm. Trouble is, if its your hard spent cash, you would want to know what the future held before handing over the cheque.

Less than 12 months later, Rover are in administration, warranties are invalid and resale values have suffered. No Rover owner can complain about their warranties, because that possibilty had been voiced in the press a number of times. Its a risk we all take through exercising our own choices.

Remember Jamie Oliver slated Turkey Twizzlers as dangerous unhealthy crap a few weeks ago? Sales increased by 25% the following month. Just shows how negative opinions have no effect on the public.

Clarkson is in the Sun this weekend, pointing out GM's position being near collapse, the fact that Fiat would be dead if it wasnt for Italian government bailouts and that Ford have been technically insolvent for years "all of which is probably my fault too". He knows the way his comments on Rover have been taken, but he still does have a couple of valid points about the firm.

There are many reasons for Rover's demise, and press/media coverage is only a small percentage. Rover was still outselling BMW in the fleet market up to March 2005, and was ahead of Toyota. People were buying, just not at the capacity that Rover were producing. Perhaps if they had cut production 12 months ago, laid some staff off, they'd still be going today. The economics just didnt stack up to their production output.

I used to like Clarkson, still like his sense of humour but dont like him now.
Me and Clarkson are worlds apart, i have a rover, 3 motorbikes and to top it all i tow a caravan too:bgrin2:
So Mr Clarkson you can shove it cos if i ever see your curly topped mop behind me in my mirrors (yes i do use them) while i'm towing you will find that i can make my caravan 10 feet wide a*sehole.

What does he know about cars anyway, if you asked him what happens under the bonnet he wouldn't have a clue, besides if the cars he's talking about cost under ÂŁ134570000000 then he's not interested. Snob, the average motorist can't afford the kind of cars he drools over, or w***s over. He kept slagging off Ford until they brought out the new gt40 then he was all starry eyed over them. Massive hypocrit.

I think we are all missing the point here and that is ............

Clarkson is fully aware of his part in the downfall of MGR otherwise he would not have written this............Some people are saying the demise of
MG Rover is my fault because etc etc.............

Not only is he aware of it but he feels he must defend his position. If he wasn't concerned about it he would not have mentioned it.

He is rattled and its getting to him.

I have just received a reply from the Telegraph after writing to them ref the comment about MGR

My e-mail..........

"But if Deloitte was proscribed, as it implies, from making explicit what it really thought about the business, then the relevant accounting rules are - like a second-hand Rover car - only fit for scrap."

What a disgusting thing to write. There are thousands of Rover owners who buy and read the Telegraph ................... shame on you.

The reply...........
Oh dear. No offence was intended. Sorry.

At least they replied :)

Clarkson may not have caused the demise of Rover, but his digs were persistant and constant so barely a show escaped without some degrading reference. So regular were his attacks, I consider they went past humour or journalism, it was more like on a personal level.
Unfortunately, what he says does stick in your mind. I have difficulty looking at the RS Focus without recalling his damning of the steering trying to pull the car from gutter to gutter (where his press seems to originate from?). There was no mention of this when he wanted the new GT, though. All Fords were suddenly "cool". OK,it was meant to be funny but his blinkered selection does start to grate after a while. As to the outright comment on the 75 recently as being "an awful car", words fail me.
Co-presenter, James May, was originally quietly defensive (particularly about the 75) when he first appeared on Top Gear although this seemmed to quickly change.
Although he may have made recent refernces to the states of GM and Fiat, they certainly will not get a regular public trashing about it.

'Some people are saying the demise of MG Rover is my fault because I failed to give the cars a good review. I can't understand this reasoning.'

That's because you're thick Jeremy, and have about as much awareness of how your column and TV show affect public perceptions as the Chinese government has of the concept of 'human rights'.

Who voted that f*cking moron Motoring Writer of the Year?

I notice that the article has disappeared, perhaps someone at Times Online decided to censor his point of view on the collapse of MG Rover.

As much as we can roar over this, blaming people and calling them very intresting names, it aint going to do no good, the only thing we are doing is making ourselfs look like commen yobs.

Rovers gone, hurts me alot to say that but it has, they win, we lose. Game over, its time for MG to go at it alone, to fight back.

Please all grow up! IF JC caused the demise of Rover with his comments...and therefore his simple opinions were so effective in sales... then WHY didnt MGR bung him a million and get him to endorse thier product! The simple fact is that Rover were an easy target....easy to poke fun at.... and the reason they died was that not enough people wanted to buy them! It doesnt matter how you want to WISH it... thats the truth! I have a 75 and had a long line of ROvers. Not enough people shared my enthusiasm... just as i bought betamax video and a BSB Squarial! You have to make products people want and if you dont... thats what happens....! And oyu can't blame JC for that!

Clarkson is a huge media presence. Think car programmes and you automatically think of Clarkson. he's even branched out into tech programmes, his own chat show, and Have I Got News For You. Of coarse he's going to have an effect on people's views, espesially naive and ignorant viewers and readers, which I would say is about 80% of people in UK, if not more.
