I always thought Clarion were a fairly good make.

Im not too sure though, you dont hear of them very much. Dont know where you would place them amongst other brands.

They do some great stuff (e.g DRZ9255) but have also done some really terrible stuff IME. Have a play with one and see if you like it. I can't see as they're going to be any less reliable than other makes, it's just a question of whether you find it pleasant to use.

Some Clarion units are/have borne striking resemblance to McIntosh headunits, but I haven't heard of a larger headunit manufacturer making Clarion's stuff... still, it's always a possibility - there's lots of people making stuff for other people in the ICE game.. 99% of stuff that's "hand made" anywhere is made in the far east and merely assembled in the country they're "made".. Some Rockford Fosgate headunits were made by Denon, Eclipse is really Fujitsu Ten, etc... Don't take too much of this kind of thing at face value - where and who kit is made by is largely irrelevant, other than consumer perceptions.

I've got a Clarion headunit. It's a couple of years old now,
plays Mp3 discs. 51 watt amp. Overall not had a problem with
it. I've only got it hooked up to the standard R45 saloon speakers although
the sound quality seems not to bad. I've found it's not the easiest
thing to use... had a couple of times where I've needed to get the
manual out again. My previous head unit was an Alpine system,
but the laser went on that after 4 years. I'd say the cd-ejection
system felt better on the Alpine, and possibly sound quality
was a tiny bit better, but equally the radio reception was useless,
where as the Clarion seems ok.

I'm usually quite an audio-phile. I've a £800 stack system in the main room
of the house, but never really got in to going mad with car audio, since there so much road/wind noise
anyhow... plus not got the cash!
