What makes them think its not a straight forward Head Gasket change?

Did you let it overheat?

 

worse case it should be £500-£600, and that is with a recon head, why do they want to replace the engine??????

 

My thoughts exactly... unless the timing belt went and you got bent valves... which is not HGF...

 

Is the car already at a garage,....stripped down?

Think you need to sack your garage and give Russell a ring.

Could you give us as much detail of what happened, and what the garage found, theres a bloody good possability it isnt even HGF.

Unless the engine is seized etc they are truly taking the Mick.

Change your garage before you end up paying for work you defo don't need.

 

Its obvious this garage are out of there depth but rather than admit they havent got a clue they quote a ridicoulsy high price to make you go away

 

For that money they are asking, you could buy a newer model.

It's the 'can't be boyhrted' tactics I'm afraid.

I had asked around the forums for a MG specialist in the Glasgow area. One that was mentioned with good reviews and familiar with our engines is Paul McFadden in Motherwell, phone number is 01698 254 141.
I had purchased my own TF now sadly traded in from McHargs but would never have dreamt of taking it into them.
Make sure the Multi Layer Gasket is used, a new water pump fitted and new belts when he is doing the job.
Unless the engine was ran dry and warped it should be a straightforward repair.

Help please! Disaster on Wednesday. 04 plate MGTF cylinder head gasket blown. Quoted for replacement of engine £2500-£3000 (£1750 engine + £800 labour + £500 contingency incase the find something else needs replacing. Opinions welcomed or does anyone know someone who would want to buy for parts. I live in Glasgow and there are no MG specialists in this area.

He has travellled to Scotland......does charge for travel but still a hell of a lot cheaper than OP quoted!!!!

Linda there are MG specialists in and around Glasgow. There is also

in Motherwell who is and MG Specialist and does a lot of work for the guys on MGFreedom.
I have no association with Paul but know that he comes highly recommended.
