Celica GT 190 - Anyone driven one?

My friends on the hunt for a Celica GT190 (with the mahoosive wing on the back). I don't really know a great deal about them, other than that the motoring press doesn't rate them that much (but then they don't rate my CTR either so, pah, what do they know). Has anyone driven one, are they really that bad, or are the media just downtalking it. Reports say it's noisy, thrashy and a bit of a modern day capri. Just not seeing it myself.

Can anyone shed some more insightful help? Below is the car in question.

Crank case oil starvation leading to the pistons coming through the block, the blame was put at the door of the pre-cats coming adrift being ingested into the engine damaging the piston rings but the problem is still happening on cars that have had these pre-cats removed. Makes most F/TF HGF look tame.

Eeek, that would explain why they've scrapped that engine then. The 1.8 in the Yaris SR is all new.... apparently.
Those 1.8 VVTL-i engines are very thrashy and have to be worked really hard to get the best from them which becomes really tiresome.. much like my Yaris T-Sport.

As for the paint chipping, I can believe it as mine was covered with stone chips until the chips away man came and sorted it :)

I've personally not heard of any of those problems with any of the engines. We've had 3 Yarii in the family and they've never missed a beat. My sisters has got 70k on the clock, been in the family since new and has had nothing but new tires/brakes and the like. I'm not saying they're faultless, my t-pot's build quality is a tad rubbish... its had several bits sorted under warranty.

 Ah.....the joys of youth eh? :D

To be fair the nasp MR2's are pretty quick, but the TET is the way to go (insurance allowing obviously.....hahaha!) Minor tuning turns it into a real giant killer and a bomex kit and rear wing + some suitably phat hoops makes it a real looker too. Its one of the few cars i'd swap my F for.

looks good with the big wing etc etc. Not that great performance wise compared to previous celicas.

The engines are the same as the MR2 with the same inherent suicidal tendencies.
would that be the same engine in the corrollas? 1.8 vvti?

The smaller Yaris engines eat water pumps, a friend has a new water pump on his Yaris on every other service! Apparently this is typical - so much for Toyota reliability.
toyota reliability is a myth

ill compare the celica to the CTR i have. the celica looks better. It ends there. if its the same engine as the corrolla...which my mate has ill also compare to it.

Corrolla, is quite quick, but never as quick as the CTR, The corrolla is worse on fuel, the civic grabs 35mpg. Even when the corrolla isnt going hard its still pretty dodgey on fuel.

As for reliability. Honda takes em to the cleaners :broon:

edit: most of my comments are based on the 1.8vvti corrolla as a friend has one. Only seen the celicas in passing but think they are the smae engine.
