The heatshield on the bottom of the catalytic convertor came loose and started dragging on the road, making loads of noise (how many dirty looks!)

When I got the car home, I jacked the car up and pulled the heat shield off, as it was only held on by one corner. It looks like the corners have rusted through.

Is this heat shield a legal / MOT requirement (driving around without it at the moment!) ?

Can I just re-attach it using big jubilee clips (or something similar) or does it need to be welded on?

Will leave it off, if its not essential!

I'll keep it in the boot though, in case I need it for the next MOT.

Thanks for the reply. :D

Don't worry it isn't part of the MOT. Just avoid parking in long dry grass after thrashing it for a while.

I had this too, although I don't know where the bottom half went!

Anyway, I had my tracking done about an hour before my MOT, and we slung the remains of the heatshield in the bin.

They didnt mention it at MOT, so it must be ok.

Also, to be honest, at first glance I wouldn't have noticed if it was there or not anyway!
