Hi

Normally I wash the car by hand but as it's to cold to get a bucket of water out, does anybody use ' normal ' car washes at the garage? The mg manual states that they aren't recommended I guess because of the spoiler. Could they really rip the spoiler off?

I use the manual one at the mo because its cold. I.e one with the foaming brush and a lance that has a pressure washer/wheel cleaner dispenser/hot shampoo/pressure wash with wax all in one. mines £1 for 3 mins and i can do a deep clean in 9 minutes so its about the same price as an automatic one but a lot better!

Also means everyweek a can give it a once over for £1.

I take my flexi blade too to dry it off just to make sure theres no water marks.

sureley these things aren't THAT badly built that te spoiler could detach so easily!!
No, they are not that badly built - but you will find that auto car washes will quite happily (and effortlessly) remove large spoilers from most cars fitted with them (sometimes with further serious damage to body panels as well).

I used one regularly on the first car that I kept for three years and during that time it wrecked the paint, covering it with fine scratches.

I now go to the hand car wash down the road who have a nice permanent setup behind a restaurant. They have not managed to scratch my paint yet and seem quite careful with washing and changing the kit they use. For £5 they do a very thorough job and go all the way up to a full valet service.

Don’t do it. Years ago I worked in a garage that specialise in vintage cars. One of our regulars came in one day in a state of shock and soaking wet. He had put his Riley into the car wash which had torn the roof off! Drenching him sitting inside with soapy water. It was a nice job for us rebuilding the wood and canvas roof :)
