Can I swap the fobs from one car to another..

Hi.
I am about to break my 620 Si and was looking for part to keep for the Ti. One idea I had was the key fobs...

My reason:
The Si has two keys and two fobs..the Ti has one key!

My question is, can I swap the two over? and if so how much trouble/work is involved.

Thanks in advance, Dave.

After 96 the fobs and central locking ECU are matched pairs and will (afaik) fit on the Ti. Keys are another matter, if you have the large key with transponder (also 96 and up) i suggest you get a copy made at a good lock smith. They can clone the trasnponder chip.

see http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=371151 and search forum to gain an idea of what's required / time etc (+ ascertain which type etc ie Radio/IR etc
There are photo's on forum of the 2 types)

You can clone Transponder keys for £28 - so no issue there with Ti - I have 3 keys - 1 hidden on the car. 1 hidden with the missus ! My fobs failed about 4 yrs ago .. 1 lasted 10 yrs plus.

If you don't take on the change, a complete 620SI working fob/ECU/keys would get a few pence on fleabay.
Thanks guys...

Devon/Gordon, I just looked at the link you've put up and it seems such a lot of work just to have working fobs. I was hoping I could just change the receiver in the boot..LOL

Ulmenkott/Joakim, From what you are saying is that if I take the RED key to a locksmith thats all I need to get a spare cut. That idea is no doubt the easiest...

I could then recover the cost of the new key by selling the Si's working keys, fobs and other bits.

Will think this one over, there's no rush...

No, the red key is a menace.. ditch that or hide it somewhere ;)
If you insert it in the lock the engine ECU will go blank and you wont be able to start the car again. Have your working (black) key with you and the locksmith will be able to clone it.

The old fobs + matching ecu have a value for someone with dead fobs. (Like me ;) )

I think youll run into probs swapping keys over
But the fobs are as you suspect (providing neither of them are the single button honda type ) just a case of swapping the receiver on the right hand side of the boot over , thats it , no magic or mystery 3x10mm bolts jobs a good un , andy
Dave,
As Joakim states, whatever you decide - bin the red key immediately.

I was perhaps not 100% clear - clone for £28 ish from the black key. Took the guy about 5 mins including cutting new key, they just flash the transponder. (need no ID or the car)

The major issue for me was ever losing a key, so have 3 now. (as you can probably see from posts, people who use Red key through ignorance of its effect and lose their only key are ****ed, to put it politely, no cheap cost effective work around/bypass)

I just open /lock with key in door now.

So I can nick the fobs and the receiver and put them in the Ti and this won't effect the the keys?

The fobs are just for lazy people like me then....

Yes... when I broke my 620ti I sold both fobs and the ECU to another 600 owner here and he now has remote locking ...

NOTE:~

Anyone trawling the breaker yards and finding a 600 with both fobs should get them and the ECU from the boot. Rarely seen that, perhaps one in fifty cars in local yards but, very useful if they are discovered.
..
yup 2 fobs and the control unit from the boot , thats it nothing else needed , andy
Thanks for that...a little job for the weekend.
Home early today......changed the ECUs in the boots over and hey presto...two working fobs and one key.....now I'll get another key cut for a full set....job done.

Thanks again.

Dave.
