Can I safely remove the heat-shield above my exhaust on my 1994 rover 214sli (it's rattling)?

Firstly, you've posted in the wrong forum, your car is an 'R8' Rover.

Secondly, I wouldn't remove it seeing as it protects the fuel tank from the heat of the exhaust, why is it rattling? Surely it would be better to get it fixed properly.

It's just that I'm skint and read somewhere on this forum that some people have just removed them on some cars so if I can do that, save money and not blow up that would be great. Any idea on cost?

If I get it replaced, is it a job for my local garage or my local exhaust centre?
