Rover 45 1.6 Apparent sudden failure (engine). On removal of cylinder head no.4 piston crown noted to be burnt away on back edge with top ring showing. 22,000 miles only. Apparently no previous indication of problems except cooling fans running for longer than normal after switch off. Other pistons/bores look superficially OK. Burning holes in pistons used to be claimed due to weak mixture/wrong plugs/etc, but with ECU and modern engine management is this still possible or is some other Gremlin at large! Would be interested to hear views. Incidentally - just out of warranty and agent not interested. B*****d. (Arnold Clark, wanted £3000 to supply & fit new engine)

Will post a picture next week when i get the old engine back.
