Build Quality

Having seen yet another CJJ nightmare job posted, I would ask this question. Do all MGR cars suffer from this poor build quality or is it unique to the F / TF? I have had the best part of 45 years of tinkering with cars and never come across the amount of strife seen with this car.

I don't think it bodes well for MG6 owners a few years down the road. Discuss.

Went and test drove an LE500 and found the build quality to be just as bad if not worse than my current TF.

Sat in an MG6 too and found that to feel poorly made with squeaks and creaks from the dash when on the road.

Ive also seen a used 09 TF with head failure.

I owned an MG ZT 190 V6 for two years (2002), and the build quality on that was very very good.
I now own an '97 MGF and the build quality is not so good.
My mum over the years has owned two MGF F's and a TF and the build quality on those was not so good.
They're great little cars and I love mine to bits, but I knew what to expect when I bought mine.
Its about how they look, go and feel for me. My wifes company car, a Kia C'eed is our everyday runabout car, and that has exeptional build quality and an exeptional spec believe it or not!! Because of that, I tend not to worry about the flimsy ish feel of my F.

build quality? what is this?

My ztt seems preety well screwed together, and my old f was the same really. Apart from the dial pod nothing really squeeked or rattled. Replaced a few roofs because of magic holes appearing.

Got to remember these cars are getting old now. My Ztt is 8 years old now. My metro is coming up to 15 :err:

There is no doubt that the build quality went down hill will Project Drive (dive?), many of the parts that have stopped working on later TF's are still fine on my early 02 TF. Having said that the F and TF were largely hand built so build quality can always be best described as variable. The was also something of an after hours Scunkworks type project with a very small budget and so in best MG tradition the parts bin well and truly raided.

My Dad's 04 Rover 45 has better build quality but it's not as good as his past 45's and 400's etc - again Project Drive...

I've never been too sure about the build quality of the MG Motor TF but the MG6 seems allot better.

Pretty much what Chris said.

My 96 F was a solid car well screwed together and the cheapest car to maintain I have ever had.
My 02 TF on the other hand always felt like cost savings were already very much in evidence and later TFs seem a lot worse.

Worth also remembering that if the car you own was not bought by you from new, then how well was it looked after before you got it - especially since its 7 years since the OEM went under.

At one of the Longbridge talks that Ian Pogson did I remember some discussion over the development budget for the F. I can't remember which specific car part of another manufacturer he said it was equivalent to but suffice to say they didn't have a lot to play with, which probably explains why some parts are cheaper than we'd all like..

I cannot really comment on build quality too much, as most of the MG's I bought were from brand new and lasted about a year before part exchanging - but I never experienced any particular problems (apart from the side repeaters falling off when washing my brand new MGF 1.8i for the very first time..). At least MGF's (and one TF160) seemed pretty solid, this is from 2000 to 2002.

The 2001 Trophy we have has never had any real problems, quality wise, and the undersides are still quite clean. What I have found shocking is some pics of the state of later cars, especially underneath - some look a lot worse ( TF's in particular, for some reason) than what we see on Wheeler Dealers on cars that are 20/30 years older! I would never invest in a TF from 2003 onwards for that reason, imagined or not.

+++1 on what Chris & David have said

The build on my 52 plate seems far beter than on my 05 but suprizingly a motoring journalist drove my car on Monday and he was pleasantly suprised and I witnessed the big grin factor..... he commented on how planted it felt and the responsive handling also how good the brakes are, now all this is probably down to the mod's Ive done, but I'm expecting quite a good review to be printed, if he covers the drive :broon:
