If a cable has snapped then it's an interior out and subframe dropped job to replace it unfortunately.

Quite commonly the retaining clips at the gearbox end will come off and allow the cable to move, 30 seconds to check and the same again to replace :broon: I'm sure someone will have pics as I can't see them here at the moment

It sounds a reasonable amount of time depending on problems.

The subframe needs to be lowered to facilitate replacing the cables so much depends on whether possibly a bolt shears / rounds etc which will take alot of the time.

You could try Jon Norris*, a member on here who does excellent work at probably much better rates than most garages.

*other mobile mechanic services are available also, namely Kayleigh and Russell on this forum.

7 hours is reasonable but it can be done WITHOUT subframe being dropped. Fiddly but I did it a few years ago.

I Bought JasonMGF's car with this problem and had it fixed by a local garage using a set of cables I bought from ebay, total cost was ÂŁ360 but I replaced both cables with brand new ones (ÂŁ120) and they charged me an extra ÂŁ80 to fiddle around with it when it still didnt work after they fitted them (I ended up fixing it myself :p ) They said fitting of the cables took them 9 hours due to the subframe bolts being seized and needing cutting out + welding.

Apparently it's possible to fit new cables without dropping the subframe in a few hours but I think most garages will use the official method (6-9 hours).

I could buy the cables from ebay then for ÂŁ80 odd and who would fix it? where are the mobile mechanics based around on this forum?

how much would a standard garage charge to fix this problem?

i have a predicament now......

whats this bloody motor worth with the problem? silver mg tf 52 reg...please advise..

im stressed/depressed/ need motor for work/etc/etc/

cheers

Bristol is 135 miles one way from us, Dave is fully booked til 15th September but it is something the garage next door to us can do at similar rates to what Dave would charge to do it, as we pass him a hell of alot of work so he cuts his prices for forum members as a gesture of good will for us doing so. But that would mean having the car recovered here by the RAC or us fetching it on trailer, and the garage next door to us fixing it and then you collecting via train when its finished...

Or as already mentioned, there is Russell who might be able to do it by coming to your house and doing it. But we're too busy to be able to do that and you'd be waiting til 15th September if you did want us to do it mobile at your house

I had this problem on my F, it was a right **** to do without dropping the subframe but we had to strip the middle centre console, t bar etc out allowing us access.

Best of luck with the repairs :broon:

I did one last week for a guy in Peterborough, left the subframe in place, same with the T-bar and the centre tunnel, just had to move the radio console out of the way but didn't totally remove that either ....

Gotta say its a bit of a juggling act though...lol

its tricky to work out whats hapening now...

to be honest as all the coverings and all sorts have been removed it seems the gear stick can be moved forward and backwrds without any force, but i cannot move it left or right.

dunno tbh.

should i just buy both? then sell the other one?

then it sounds like your forwards and backwards cable is broken (short cable) this is also the one more likely to break. You are probably stuck in a gear which is why you cant move the stick left or right. if you jack up the rear of the car you can manually operate the lever on the gearbox to get it into neutral and then confirm which cable is broken. (I'll take some pics later if you need).

Although having said that if you are paying for the labour to change one I would get both replaced just as a precaution. ÂŁ40 extra for the 2nd cable is a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run should the other cable break.
