bout 100 m8t at least i always leave at least 400 before braking hard unless i have too couse some **** in a bmw cuts me up lol

 

usually takes 100-200 miles, depending on how much you're braking. I try and not brake hard for as long as possible.

 

depends on make of pads, usually around 300 miles.

 

Change my brake pads 2 months ago and took roughly 200miles to bed in.

 

Now why is braking hard not recommended when bedding in brakes??

If you don't replace the disks, then the pad / disc contact is on a very small area until the pads become the same shape as the disks. You might find initially there's only 10% of the contact area!!!

This is normal, but does mean the brake are not as effective without pressing hard, and they become very hot, very quickly. If you brake hard before bedding in the pads will glaze, which is bad, but they can also overheat boiling fluid, or warping the disks.

One of the reasons for running in a new car is not only the engine, but parts such as brakes as well.....

 

OK, just wanted to know the physics behind it - I know not to push them hard but never knew the reasoning behind it. Although I have to say sometimes with new brakes even through normal carefully measured breaking you can get them quite hot and very smelly.

Also, because they won't stop you in time!

When I changed the fronts on my 25 1.4, they felt very soft for the trip to work but spot on by the time I was getting home that evening - so about 100 miles in my case!

 

i've just changed my brake pads on my 25 1.4.

how long does it take for the pads to bed in as there seems to be quite a bit of travel in the pedal at the moment.

done around 60 miles since i changed them.

The pedal shouldn't be long, just that the brakes don't seem to be as effective as before.

Sounds like there is air in your system or the brake fluid needs changing.

Take the drums off the back and check the wheel cylinders for leaks. I've just had to do both wheel cylinders on my Partner's bubble 200, then a bloddy good bleed, and the pedal is now very firm and the brakes very effective.

Brake fluid will ONLY boil if it is too old and has absorbed too much water! It should be changed every 2 years
