put my car into the local tyre place last week to check tyres and do tracking prior to MOT and asked if my tyres were ok, what do you know, failed MOT today....one tyre low tread depth, now need new tyre and a re-test. I think its all a bit subjective. hubby put his Type R in on monday for a service & 1st MOT and needed a new tyre, was told it was down to the canvas,he hit the roof and asked them to show him how they decided that (he is 100% fanatical about tyres and safety checks regular) they waffled on a bit and never did prove it,he had to take car in on wednesday as they forgot to MOT it on schedule, then they never charged him for it.....bit suspect??or am I sceptical.? Lady before me in garage today just scrapped through MOT (tyres again) is it just paranoia on my behalf

VOSA have a complaints and appeals process for MoT testing. http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repository/The Service We Give You.pdf

yes but the only problem with appealing is you cant fix the car until the appeal test has been carried out, I need my car for work so will just get new tyres tomorrow and get it back to be re-tested.

On the positive side, the cost of a tyrei s not too bad on the mot front.

If I had any doubts I'd certainly not be going back to the mot garage though.

Care to name the x-part garage? I've been to two x-part places that were not very good. One has since closed down, which is good as their work and service were awful and the other one, well, I never got so far as having any work done by them as they ordered the wrong part three times in a row.

Having said that, went to a 'new' x-part place thats opened up close to me and will defo being going back.

Here in Sweden we all ***** about the fact that the state has a monopoly on MOT's. Yet now I see the system isnt so bad, if they fail you they have nothing to win and if they pass you they must be able to confirm you have a road safe vehicle. If you dont agree with the tester you can appeal straight away and a techy of a higher rank will check and either pass or confirm the failure. A recheck on the work performed to get you through the test is only ÂŁ10 or so, so not a real high price. No Ford, Rover, Mazda or any other dealer can manipulate the system or earn a few extra bucks by failing you (not that the named companies ever would of course). So seeing this thread I think I will stop moaning next time my MOT is up for renewal.
