Best satnav coverage in europe?

Hi All,

Ive looked back through the archives and there have been a few "whats the best satnav?" topics. Has anyone any recent satnav experience with detail levels in France, Italy and mainland Greece?

(Yes this could have been asked elsewhere in the wider forums but I tend to view satnavs as needing to be specifically MGF friendly - ie you can actually hear them at autobahn speed witht he roof down, and can see the display in sunlight.)

Basically the map data on my Navman N20i is a tad old now (2006) and is due for upgrade. The updated EU maps for the N20 are only november 2008 so a couple of years old already, dont cover greece and are £100 (I only paid £150 for it new!)

I like the N20i and with the T1 traficmaster add-on unit it is really good at avoiding jams as it auto recalcs the route arond the problem - but £100 for EU maps already two years old and not covering one of my target 2011 destinations Im left wondering if its time to look for a replacement MGF friendly system

Comments please...?

as an ex trucker I'd say that the majority of European professional drivers use Garmin Nuvi's. They seem to still be very popular from the forums I keep in touch with so that'd be my recommendation!

I have a TomTom, it's a bit quiet at times but is brill, does auto routing and a RDS lead updater ..
There is a deal on at the moment for the new europe maps which I need to get if I also do my 2011 target of going with Mr and Mrs Art to the alps !!
To cut down on the number of leads/chargers etc. I have Navigon installed on my iPhone ( 3GS ) plugged into the aux in on the radio, plenty of volume roof down, we have just returned from an European trip, no real problems with navigation apart from one high temperature temporary shut down, it seems quick to re route if I decide to detour off the recommended route, I am not sure if there is a version for other phones but it is the equal of my previous standalone Navman, during my ownership 3 map/app upgrades have been made available without charge and I think the traffic news subscription is available for about £20.
I just got CoPilot for £19.99 for the iphone, paired with my wharfedale bluetooth stereo all directions come through speakers. Absolutely spot on. Will say though that even with it on charge battery died after 4 hours (Lancs to London) but I think thats the bluetooth draining the battery and you can quite easily use it without.
Be a bit wary of the "...installed on my phone" options - they tend to download map data over the network rather than storing it on an SD card (like normal TomTom units). The Google Nav on my Android phone is perfect within the UK (especially when it reads instructions through my BlueTooth stereo), and it also does live traffic updates and re-routing, but I'm not sure how much it would cost in data for a pan-European trip.

You can download TomTom maps online for *ahem* a lot less than £100, but I'm not sure if the Live traffic updates would still work then.
All my maps are stored on the iPhone's internal memory so no data charges when in Europe for normal navigation, not sure how live traffic information works or is charged but in over 30 years of European motoring I have not been caught in any traffic hold ups other than when French farmers decided to hold one of their infamous lightning strikes, usually short lived as everyone wants to get away for the 2 hour lunch break.
One useful feature is that Navigon warns of speed cameras, it does not detect if they are active but a warning is given if you are approaching a potential site, which is all the more ironical as on the recent trip I was ' flashed ' when not using the sat nav because as it was a local trip I did not consider I needed navigational help, that will teach me, I am now waiting to see if my speed was high enough for the Swiss authorities to chase me, fingers crossed !
Have to say I've been impressed with my TomTom XL, which has GB + Western Europe map preloaded. Has never let me down across France and Spain, even locating our villa, which is in a tiny village off the beaten track in Eastern Spain.

Plus you can download Mr T or Darth Vader as the sat-voice, what more could you ask for in life??
