hi all
the car was only running about a week ago after a 50 mile run, went to car today and nothing not even enough power for the alarm
took battery off to charge and only 3.3 v reading ....its only 8 months old
put on a spare and car started no problems and reads aross terminal 14.1 v so alternator is ok...well so far
i still have the warranty so no problem....if they say it is knackered.... but could it be a problem with a short somewhere
i am going to leave this battery on it and see how long it lasts
hmmmmm

Low electrolyte levels cause loss of capacity and degradation of the exposed plates. Shorts are caused plate sediment falling to the bottom and bridging them. In extreme cases the plates can buckle under high loads also causing shorts.

If you have an AVO meter you could check how much current is flowing with every thing turned off, by removing the negative lead, connecting the meter (on amps) between the terminal and the earth strap. There may be a very small drain due to immobiliser and memory backups of radio etc. Any thing significant and there is a problem.

Looking at 27 milli amps after system has stablised. That is interior lights gone out and car auto locked. Just be aware that current will be a lot higher at start due to solenoid locking. Start on higher range and work down. You may wish to disconnect horn to as alarm will activate. Hope this helps.

It has been blooming cold lately. The freezing conditions are the quickest at decharging a battery, especially after a week! Mine goes flat in 3 days in these temps.

Is it a lead based battery or calcium?

The Bosch S5 battery is designed to overcome this problem and gives more cranking power. http://www.carbatteriesonline.co.uk is the cheapest place I've found for them. ÂŁ60 inc vat and delivery!!
