Auto Headlights… a problem?

Afternoon all,

Taken delivery of my ZS a few days ago and noticed something odd about the auto lights. I’ve been for a drive today, and although there are clouds in the sky it was still very bright out (bright enough for sunglasses) - but the auto headlights were on, and therefore dimming the displays.

I manually switched them off and went about my business. Then, on the drive home, the same thing happened. A bright sunny day, but auto headlights were on.

I’ve washed the windscreen and made sure there’s nothing obscuring the sensor but it seems adamant that the lights should be on.

Does this car have a lowthreshold for headlights, or does something seem faulty?

I’d be interested to hear your experiences with this.

Hello mate just made a post regarding the same thing. Got my car last week no issues with this at all. Yesterday after a longish drive. After starting the car my headlights were on only turning them off made the dash light up again. I've also got a clean window screen so it's not that. I start work early tomorrow so I'm going to see if they work in a little dull lighting just to see if the sun is actually making the sensor over react and thinks it's dark. Like trying to take a picture with your phone in the sun it all looks dark.

If not then we have the same fault.

Could I ask does your passenger air bag light in the centre over head light column stay on when a passenger is in the seat. Mine seem to come on when starting the car but go off after a short time.

Cheers

MG ZS 2022 Model: I have exactly the same problem - the default auto setting of the lights always "thinks" it is night. Consequently: 1. Headlights always on (unless I switch them off manually on the lighting stalk) 2. Dash display dulled, so hard to see in daylight (it obviously comes bright if I manually switch off the headlights) 3. The infotainment/mapping system, if set to auto in day/night, always in night mode (with dark mapping) and dulled screen. It only returns to daytime settings if I switch off the headlights manually, or manually adjust the infotainment settings. I think it must be a design/software fault.

I have the same problem..remove/put back the fuse fixes the problem temporary but not permanently..Did anyone find permanent solution for this issue?
I have the same issue with my 72 plate zs. We have owned it from new. The dealership had it back to investigate in January and told us that was how the auto lights work ... they automatically come on when starting the car and you turn them off manually! Knowing this is not right I did my own bit of investigating and worked out if you pull fuse 19 under the dash in passengers footwell which operates power fold mirrors and auto wipes and lights they all work as they should. This generally lasts around 3 weeks then needs doing again. I have spoken to the dealer and they couldn't answer why it does this so i have it booked in again for them to look at.

Hello everyone. I'm a new ZS (2022 Exclusive 1.0 T-GDI Automatic) owner from Turkey. I have the same issue: Auto headlights and wipers are always on, even on sunny days. I red posts on this forum about the issue and used infante.nicolas2's method: removed and put back the fuse 19 (see the picture). It really fixed the problem but temporary, as zoranm and Hadlow69 said :( I reported the issue to the service. They say that is a common problem and software solutions they tried was useless (a part replacement is necessary). I'll go to the service for this part replacement under warranty and inform you about the news...

My experience with reporting this issue..They run diagnostic and no errors shown, so they tried to convince me that it is normal car behaviour. After I escalated this to the dealer management, they made consultation with the regional importer and confirmed that it is common issue, so now waiting the dealer to get the sensor and call me for replacement. Btw, it is the same sensor that controls the wipers as well, so if the wipers are in auto mode they are running although it is not raining. Hope this will help someone

I got my ZS a month ago and it has the same problem. DEaler has raised ticket with technical people and they say they now have 4 cars with the same problem. Been it touch with MG UK and they say they are unaware of the problem but would be working with the dealer to resolve it. I would of thought changing the sensor is a no brainer, but I appear to be wrong. My dealer has looked at three new models in the showroom and they are the same so it looks like a common problem! I await a call from the dealer.

Been in touch with the dealer twice and said they would ring back, but still waiting!!
Been in touch with a couple of dealerships here in the North East and they tell me they have had no type of these issues, but did say once a technical ticket is raised it has to be responded to within 2 days? I also spoke to a dealer in the South of England who said the same and said it looks like the sensor but from experience the normal excuse is a software problem given by MG Uk which dosn’t really help those of us with the problem. I will keep badgering the dealer and my next step is return the car as it was faulty when they sold it to me.

I have a 2 week old ZS Exclusive. I collected it with dim clocks on a sunny day, dealer couldn’t understand it. Habit now the headlights come on when u start it (sunny or not) and a quick turn to manually turn them off to see dash clocks. Only car I have owned where they come on regardless of the amount of day light.

I have rang the dealer this time bypassing sales and going to the service team (as no one had rang me back)and vented my displeasure of their response so far. The service team said they can’t do anything until a technician has seen(waited weeks for this response) so car next booked in for a couple of weeks time for 2 days! Will now have to wait and see what they come back with. Reading other people having the same problem my prognosis is the software/sensor are not comparable with the 2022 Uplift they did on this model, but we will wait and see - here’s hoping

Picked my ZS Exclusive up on Tuesday and it was doing this too. Popped it down to my dealer Nathaniel Cars Bridgend and the technician, had a look, popped the interior mirror off, took off the cover where the sensor is, disconnected and re-connected the sensor and hey presto! No more lights! Hopefully this is a permanent fix but it's worth you guys trying to see if your dealer will do this too.

Hi All
Firstly I hope you have cracked it but it sounds like previous posts where they took the No 19 fuse out which in reality is the same as disconnecting the sensor, and lasting a couple of weeks, hope I am wrong though.

I took mine in on Monday and they had it a couple of days but after examining and testing they ordered a new part. When picking it up I enquired what the part was and was told it was the “sunshine sensor” yes that what they called it. The lights are now perfect but the tests also showed up a problem on the auto wiper rain sensing. They say the arm on the steering wheel is not talking to the rain sensor and appears faulty. They have ordered a new control arm to be fitted when it arrives. I can’t fault my dealer for the thorough examination they have carried out. I will update when it is fitted and the outcome. Hope this helps other people with this problem.

Similar issue, though when I first had the on the car in March 2023, there was no problem!
in early April I had an issue with lock on front passenger door, which the garage had in and fixed. However when I collected the car I noticed, the next day headlight issue arose!! Have taken it in to the garage, and after a bit of “head scratching “ garage Tech said “ I’ll dig around and get back to you, might be the new DEFAULT. I get back to you!” I nearly said “ You’re have a laugh !!” This has just happened

I hope you get it fixed. I think the fog light question is that a lot of new cars now have this feature. Mine did it the other night when I was comming out of a pitch datk car park. I put my headlights on and when I turned right the right side fog light came on. I went back into the car park to check and did a left turn and the left one came on. when you have completed the manouvre it goes off. I think it is to assist you when turning. I am still going to ask the question though when mine goes back in to rectify the rain sensor problem (I mentioned in a earlier post). Good luck

I know what that is, it’s cornering lights, I had those on my previous car. I’m on about both fog lights coming on when the car is at standstill and the headlights were on. Then when I tried again it didn’t do it! 🤦🏻‍♂️
HI MY FOG LIGHTS COME ON EVER TIME I START THE CAR MG ZS 72 ITS BOOKED IN FOR THE 26TH JUNE TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
