ASTRA’S A STAR AS VAUXHALL SALES AHEAD!

· Vauxhall is number one in UK market

· Astra is Britain’s best-selling car

· Vectra and Zafira also first in segment

· Number one for retail sales!

It’s not just nature that has a spring in its step at the moment, as April saw Vauxhall’s sales blossom.

A host of dynamic and stylish models encouraged buyers to take up Vauxhall’s unique
3-Day Test Drive offer, and as a result the Luton-based manufacturer has soared to the top spot in the sales charts, with 25,171 cars sold by the end of the month – 3,072 cars ahead of its nearest rival.

What’s more, the Astra ended the month as Britain’s best-selling new car, knocking the Ford Focus off top spot with 9,173 registrations.

The 3-Day Test Drive initiative contributed to this success, with on-line test drive requests up three-fold over March, helping Vauxhall claim top spot with retail customers and, at 10%, reaching the highest retail market share since August 2000.

Fleet sales were also up, with a 20.8 per cent share of the market being the highest in
12 months.

Vauxhall ended April with four of its models in the UK top 10 best seller list, and Zafira and Vectra were also first in their respective segments. Corsa was the other model in the top 10, and was the second best-selling car in the supermini sector.

Overall, Vauxhall achieved a 15.4 per cent share of the total new car market – its highest April figure since 1994!

And there’s even better news to come. As well as the continuation of the 3-Day Test Drive programme to the end of June, Vauxhall retailers will be taking delivery of the first Astra TwinTops at the end of this month, giving even more choice to the Vauxhall buyer.

You can bet that Vauxhall is removing the Focus C-Max from the figures to make them number 1.

Oh I see - well that makes sense - Or visa-versa - ford includes the CMAX to make its focus look higher up - I guess that the focus could potentially drop to 2nd or even 3rd on some occasions if they didnt try this tactic...I was always under the illusion that the C-MAX was listed separately - and you don't see as many on the roads as you do than the Zafira which is often lingering around 10th place as in April's figures...

Yes I would guess that Ford do.

In Essex there are loads of C-Max's around.

You may remember Ford's strange decision to rebadge the Orion, and called it the Escort Saloon. This was solely done in order to boost Escort Sales numbers in the charts.

Not many around here. We (family) had one in spain as a hire car though - this seems to be where a lot of CMAX's go....judging by how many there were in the Hire car MPV section of the car park at the airport... I must say I like it better than the Zafira - less boxy looking, although the Zafira is more intelligent inside.

Yes I remember when the orion was rebadged - what year was this? 1995 when the facelift was introduced to the escort range? if so around 140,000 escorts were sold in the uk (figure anorak ) and that seems pretty rosy, and would even without the saloon variant. were ford selling even more than this beforehand?

Whether or not the Astra really is #1, its certainly up there somewhere, which is good news for Vauxhall and British industry in general, afterall, it is built at Ellesmere Port.

I must admit that I like the look and the style of the Vauxhall Astra far more than the Ford Focus, although neither of them would be my choice of car.

But its good news that a British Built car is the best selling car in Britain - which is precisely what it should be.

Hopefully this will help secure the future for Ellesmere Port for many, many decades to come. They do a good job up there - I remember being very impressed when I was at the plant five years ago; it struck me as a very efficient operation.

Yes but what proportion of the Astras are UK-built? Is it still around 45%?

An observation: 'UK' brands Ford and Vauxhall make up the top 4 spots, 5 out of the top 6, and 6 out of the top ten. No Ka though, must be the deals on Fiestas...

The Ka has not been in the top 10 for a long while, and the fiesta has maintained its position in the top 6 for more than a year, if not 2 years +

I reckon around 35-40,000 Ka's are sold each year, with 43,000 being sold in 2004. This puts it in a position just below the top 10 table.
