Knowing this is a common problemn with the push fit gear knobs fitted to the Z cars to come off in your hand when the clips fail Ive found a solution to this ,

Rather than glue or araldite ive used the followng method on our ZT and ZS ,

1- Remove the Gear knob

2- Clamp the knob in steady in a vice - I used polysyrene blocks to hold it and prevent damage to the leather
- the knob needs to be positioned so the left hand side (side marked 1st and 2nd gear) is facing upmost in the vice

3 - Drill a 2.5mm hole in central in the alloy shank of the knob , you need to drill right through the plastic inside as well

4 - Tap the hole with an M4 thread

5 - place a M4 x 12mm Grub screw into the hole

6 - Return the knob to the car

7 - Tighten the grub screw with an allen key - job done now your knob should be tightly attached but still removable

Wow Carl thats a great idea! Thanks :)

I have the same problem in the zr (it is a bit worrying when you change gear and pull the knob totally off while doing it :err: ) so wrapped masking tape round the shaft (making it thicker) and forced the gear knob onto that - but think I'll be using your method soon

thanks,
Luke
