After-market reversing sensors

Bought a £30 quid reversing kit from ebay last week. Wasn't expecting much as £30 is kinda cheap, but it's a great kit!

Four sensors which get drilled into the bumper (the kit even included the drill bit) and a little digital display module that I've mounted up over the rear view mirror which has a bar graph showing distance on left or right, and a digital readout of the distance to the nearest object in meters (0.3m for eg). Early tests indicate it picks up objects as far away as 2.0m and goes down to 0.3m before it can't read any nearer. The unit bleeps slowly at first and picks up speed the nearer you get, sounding a continuous tone on the 0.3m mark.

Great kit, can't believe it is so accurate for the price, was expecting it to be a bit rubbish really. Doubting it somewhat at first, I selotaped the four sensors to the kitchen table and gave it +12v then walked around the kitchen testing it fully before taking the drill to my bumper :)

The fitting was very straight forward. The rear bumper is held on with only 7 plastic screws, 2 metal screws and some plastic clips (worrying really!). With the bumper off, there are four marks clearly visable on the inside of the bumper where the OEM sensors should go, I simply drilled a pilot from the inside out, then drilled the full size hole from the outside in, this ensured no burring of the plastic etc. There is a gromet behind the bumper which lets you pass wires into the boot, again for OEM use, so the four wires from the four sensors simply passed through here and into the boot with ease.

Once in the boot, a control module gets fitted behind the boot trim (doublesided pad included) which takes connections from the four sensors, power to the unit and the remote display unit plugs in here too. I took the +12v from the reversing lights and used a nearby earth so the unit comes on automatically as soon as you select the reverse gear.

It took longer to run the wire for the digital display over the mirror and to the boot than it did to get the bumper off, drill, fit sensors and replace bumper! Maybe I'm just fussy about not seeing any wires :)

Will take some photos and post up later, but can well recommend both the supplier (on ebay) and the kit itself!

Will it mess around this the computer now that you are taking power from the light! Try taking out a light bulb see if the car still knows!

Any way sounds very good!
Job well done!

I want some for the front of my car!

(Better to se safe than sorry)

:bgrin:

The guide!

Confirmed it doesn't interfere with the bulb checks :)

I bought the kit from eBay (this exact one) on a BuyItNow for £19.99 and £5 shipping, from *techfortress*. The kit arrived within three days and included four sensors, control module, digital display, drill bit, fitting instructions and all wiring.

Sorry for the quality of the pictures!

The kit itself.

Inside of the bumper with the four sensors fitted. Note the OEM cutouts in the foam.

Close up of one sensor fitted.

Sensors fitted, all that remains is to paint them.

Control module gets mounted on this side panel, behind the boot trim so no wires etc visable anywhere.

The OEM gromet is here, allowing the sensor wires to pass through.

All rear end work done.

Dead on the 20degree angle!

Digital display mounted up here, again no wires.

The job was very straight forward and took around two hours. One hour alone to carefully route and hide the wire up to the mirror :p

Magic. A very neat instal :) Could you send the pics to the club email address together with a little more detail in the explanation?

For now, how did you route the wires to the mirror? .I'm interested in case I ever want to put a microphone in the centre light unit.

Regards

Mike

At the top of the headlining is a very small cutout, I presume this is where the wire comes out to goto cars fitted with autodimming mirrors.

I removed the center light console, passenger sun visor and the door rubber from the front passenger door pillar. This will allow you to pull off the A post interior trim, it's only clipped in. From there, I attached my wire to a metal coat hanger and threaded it through the roof lining, towards the A pillar, where I could get my fingers in the gap and grab it.

I then ran the wire down the A pillar, behind the dash and out to the passenger footwell kick panel.

From there, down the sill of the car, up under the back seat (you can follow the existing rear light wiring for this) and up into the boot, over the wheel arch and into the recess.

To remove all this trim neatly and tuck/hide all wiring took longer than the bumper removal etc. Worth it though, can't stand seeing wires!!

Your mic could easily follow the same route down and behind the dash to the TTG, you've no doubt seen the holes for the OEM mic in the light console :)

Rich,

Is the beep loud enough to hear if you left the display unit in the boot?

I looked at these but did'nt like the look of the display unit - I would be happy just for the beep warning.

Plan would be to fit it all but leave it al in the boot out of sight.

What do you think? Would I hear it in the front?

Thanks

The facelift (2004) 25 and 45 models have the 'beeping unit' in the boot and it can still be heard by the driver but does seem a little odd coming from behind the rear seats.

Well suppose it’s for when you’re facing the back of the car looking where you’re going then the sound coming your way if you get me!

In my 'how to' for fitting the footwell lights you will see I have prepared my light unit for a mic (in my case going straight to RoverPC) - it is just a hacked PC mic with the fitting araldited hovering over the right place. The cable will easily pass down the route Rich describes ...

Your boot seems a bit odd!

You have no Rover Badge
Or holes from where it was meant to of been?
(Does have holes does it not?)

You have the crawly stile "Rover" chrome strip

You have no union jack badge – or is it not Longbridge made?

So it’s not like you have just brought the old stile chrome strip?

So what year if your car etc?

Did you have to scratch the metal to be able to solder on to them!

Was a rite pain at first till I tried it!

Some Longbridge cars were manufactured (early Summer 2001) in the above state, dealers were sent a bulletin and instructed to fit a Rover badge without the usual locating pins.

Obviously many dealers didn't bother !

Basically the new boot lids without the locating holes arrived before the new style plinth incorporating small Rover badge.

The original plan was to change to new style plinth (with small badge) and fitment of Union flag at the same time but the various suppliers failed to have their parts ready for production at the same time.

You learn a new thing every day! lol

Incidentally the boot badges (without the locating pins) that the dealers were instructed to fit are better quality than those with locating pins which suffer from the gloss coating becoming very dull.

The c pillar (rear door) badges also suffer from the same problem.

Given the opportunity I will change my 'new style' plynth with crappy stick on Rover badge to the plynth with "ROVER" and separate badge quick as a flash ...

Yup, certainly would be!

The cable is miles long, so you could try various locations in the boot until you're happy with the audio, such as under the parcel sheft, behind side trims, etc.

You'll hear it fine, provided you don't have the ICE turned up ;)

Remember - it would only beep when you put it in reverse (not reversing for 200+ miles I hope :) )and even then I am sure it is possible to put a switch on the supply to diasable at will.
