Anything better than a Rover 200 L-series diesel?

It would be hard to find a cheaper beast, maybe a 1.0 AX for cheap spare parts and lower insurance but we are talking pennies.

My 45 L series has lasted over 70K so far with minimal costs. I expect it could do another 70K but this time with much lower depreciation.

Depending on how loosely you want to define the term "car", I would think a later Reliant, either a Rialto or a Mk2 or 3 Robin would be about the cheapest thing on wheels imaginable. They do like 60mpg and appear to go for no more than a few hundred pounds a piece, and IIRC have all sorts of discounts on insurance and road tax. The bodies are fiberglass and the chassis are galvanized, so as their old ads said, you'll get sick of the car long before it ever wears out.

However, I understand there's a massive stigma associated with those things over in the UK, probably even worse than the one that BL and ex-BL products have, and of course, they're not even cars in the strictest sense of the word.

Should have said, no noddy cars or robin reliants! Has to be R8/306 to mondeo size.

What I'm really after is an old school diesel with no common rail or other complicated stuff which will scrap the car if it goes wrong

L-series Rover 420, should fit the bill nicely, easily achieve high 40's mpg, rock solid l-series and the honda influnce on the rest of the car, should stand it in good stead.

Focus 1.8 tddi, should be achievable, again cheap to run.

Sorry could never recommend a french car!

I had a Rover 420D which I ran on filtered waste vegetable oil. On one journey I managed 46mpg driving from Coventry to North Yorkshire and back whilst towing a caravan.

For some reason - and don't ask me how - it was actually 3-5mpg more economical running on waste cooking oil than it was on diesel. Go figure...

If you want a larger car then i'd go for a Mk2 Mondeo TD.... i picked up a R plate cheap tatty estate for ÂŁ200 a few years ago and the car was pretty bullet proof. I used it like a van while i was doing up my house and it took the abuse very well indeed. Returned V good mpg too, even with massive loads in the back....

deffo 106 diesel mine cost me ÂŁ150 for a 1994 one without mot, its peanuts in tax as it was classed below 1500cc even though it was the 1500 cc diesel???? i could get 420 miles to ÂŁ28 of diesel at 2006 pump prices, just very uncomfortable for for a fat 6ft 2in driver so it had to go

Just given up running my old Escort 1.8TD (99 v plate)

Gave ÂŁ350 for it in March last year, spent ÂŁ300 on new suspension front and rear, wishbones, bushes etc etc when I bought it, ran it on biodiesel for 20k miles and sold it for ÂŁ400

Bargain IMHO :king: as that sale paid for the insurance on my ZT :D
