A damn good thrashing!

Since the MOT, I've fallen more in love with my pride and joy although the lumpy idle was getting up my nose. After reading all of the articles on potential solutions, and after fitting a matching set of boots to the rear to cure the 50-70 wobble, I thought I'd have a little bit of fun. Knowing that the tyres would need some time to scrub up, I didn't push too hard into and out of the corners but where possible, I used as much of the rev range as possible (legally of course officer!) and gave her a damn good thrashing.

I've never had so much fun and what made it better was the hood being down. The upshot of this is that the lumpy, uneven idle has now disappeared! She pulls like a dream and sounds better than ever.

Can't wait for the summer!

So mods are now on the cards - I was thinking of the Pipercross panel filter with re-routed air feeds and possibly a decat pipe from B&G with a MIL cable. All in this would be around the ÂŁ90 and should release some more horses. Also I'm gonna give her a good service (plugs, leads, oil, filter, fuel filter) which should help.

Can't beat the old "Italian tune" for clearing out the ol' pipes and reaching the parts that other "tune ups" fail to do!! :rocker::spanner:

Not sure what caused your lumpy idle but I'm pleased you've got it sorted.:broon:

I think you've discovered just how much of a masochist the 'K' series is.....it loves a good thrashing and rewards you every time you press the "fast" pedal!

I'm a bit old school, whereby if someone had 'thrashed' an engine, you would steer clear of buying that car. I think there is still a big element of that with modern cars. However, I have to say that I think you are spot on there Aaron with the K series. At the beginners track day at North Weald, I really went for it with Pingu. I thought he ran well before North Weald, but he really seemed to enjoy that day and has been running even better ever since. It's almost as though everything has 'loosened up'!

I've been told by a few boys who work on the K series that the motor needs be thrashed within an inch of its life every now and again aparently they like nothing better.....Keeps the old girl's pipes clear....

Moonbeam gets a good thrashing at least once a week.....Nothing better that a good red lining in every gear IMHO......

Twe.........nothing dramatic will happen if you bounce it off the rev limiter......it just cuts a cylinder or two........Go on give it a try then you know what to expect.........

Defo with a fully warmed up engine.......

especially the VVC really likes being thrashed, the 160 engine is still making power as the limiter cuts in! go on, get her to 7000rpm :)

ps. you think the K loves a thrash, the toyota 2zz-ge likes it even more 8400rpm limit :D

I was bitterly dissapointed that my car only reached 5-5.5k rpm in 3rd gear going down my local bypass (upto 70mph). I suppose I'll have to leave it in second round the big rounadbout next time!:deano:

Mike; thrashing Pingu would of cleared all the pipes out so in some sense it will loosen the engine up a bit and make them perform better. Nowadays you are warned to stay clear from an engine that is never thrashed because the engine will carbonise up and make the engine more sluggish until it is kacked
