'92 Coupe 1600 + Honda b16A2 = 197bhp...

After some debating as to whether or not I get rid of my slow 1600 coupe I bought a Honda b16a2 with integra type r cams and an apexi v-afc II VTEC engagement and fuel controller It was previously putting out 197 brake in the Civic it came out of.

This is going to be interesting, so before I start fabricating mounting brackets and stripping my standard loom apart, I'd appreciate any advice from people who have already done this.

Main obstacles will be mounting the thing, wiring in the additional loom and ECU and getting the hydraulic clutch mechanisim working.

PS - A JR Supercharger is next on the cards - I'd be interested in hearing in anyone who's fitted one of these too...

Get jiggy with your welder, angle grinder and bits of metal
BTW - Rover Coupe + B16a1 + T28 = 250bhp with torque :hyper:
good luck with sorting out the b16a2, you might need it!
its hard enough with a b16a1 let alone a b16a2 with hydro clutch  you'll need the conversion kit for that me thinks. . . and many other list of parts too
Thanks for the assuring words of advice guys :)

All being well, Rover Coupe + B16a2+ JRSC 989-511 will = 280bhp (ish) with torque

Roll on endless nights of work...
280bhp on a JRSC is a dream in the first instance as charge temps are FAR too high and something not yet achived in a Rover coupe.... unlike mine. ;)

What shafts you gonna use?

What gear linkage?

What clutch, you need either a new cable with HASport conversion kit or a civic Vti pedal box with e mastercylinder for the clutch

What ECU you gonna use, Pw0 from a CRX? or a OBD1 P28 running a P30 B16a2 map with the neccesary 4 wire lambda sensor added with the OBD1 loom conversion?

How are you going to keep the PAS

How you gonna make the custom mounts? Its not a case of 'brackets'

The most you'll get out of a jackson supercharger is 30-65bhp gains, as jonny said it will be way too hot to even think of 280 as you claim

look on www.hasport.com, they'll say the same and they supply the things at $2599, bargain, i don't think.
197bhp from a standard B16? :bandit: :_poke:

182 bhp seems to be the maximum anyone has got even with Hondata.
The seller had the car dyno'd at 197bhp running ITR cams, 4-2-1 manifold, aftermarket induction and Apexi A-VFC II fuel/VTEC controller.

The plan is to retain and fit my original gearbox, eliminating the issue of the hydro clutch. This should also allow me to utilise the mounting point on that box, (hopefully) negating the need to utilise the additional mounting brackets and therefore not do any welding.

Of course, this is all theoretical, and when I've actually done this I may find that its not a suitable install due to the increase in power (and my result in the engine trying to jump out of the car.

Before I even try to fit it in though, I'll be fabricating a testing cradle to get it running out of the car. This should allow me to identify which sections of the loom I will or won't need, making the final install a little less complicated.

Wish me luck, I'm sure I'll need it...
JR claim an increase of 52bhp for their unit (p/n 989-250 - http://www.jacksonracing.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=33371).

My reasoning for a claim of 80ish bhp increase was based on the percentage increase.

The stock engine they dyno'd had 138bhp, and after the supercharger had 190.8bhp.
This equates to an increase of 38%.

With a starting figure of 197bhp on my lump, an increase of 38% would give me 271.86bhp.

But like you say, this is unlikely, just thought I'd offer up why I was thinking like that...
On the subject of heat, one option for me may be the JR Liquid Intercooler System (http://www.jacksonracing.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=37417).

However, until I'm actually there I don't know whether I'll even be producing enough power and heat to need it.

I guess only time will tell...

Whoops, id stop reasoning like that then.

Heres advice.

The wiring is a piece of piss to sort. just use the OE Rover loom with a OBD0-1 loom. theres no way you can use the D16 gearbox either. The mounting is that hard bit to get right particularly shaft alignment. I think your planning a project a bit too involved for your apparent understanding of the Honda range of engines.

This really is the worse forum to do research on the project. Try the HONDA ones.
Agreed.

Apart from yourself and Mark I can't think of anyone on here who is going to be able to offer much more than the standard common conversion advice.

Any Honda forums in aprticular worth him looking at?
Not really for fast answers...

to understand fully going 'stateside' is ideal. With honda-tech.com hybrid section giving you an idea.

Theres no yank equivalent of the Rover so its all custom. The CRX HASport mounts could maybe be used but you maye run into issues with driveshaft allignment as the Rover has a wider track. And even then you may have issues with the rover rear engine subframe and the gearbox trying to be in the same place as the same time... let alone under dynamic loads as the engine torques.

I've done silly amounts of comparison between the CRX Vtec and Rover to ensure I understood the geometry required and the modifications needed. Then went about modding subframes and making mounts to locate it in the desired placement. 7 trackdays (1 with turbo) many trips to pod (includind 2.04sec 60foot times) and 15k road miles on 17" without any drivetrain issues isnt as easy to get as simply bolting the engine in.
Heh! Must be something about Langley that attracts Coop owners.....just sold mine the other day after 2 years of ownership.

Good luck with the engine mod - sounds like the best way to beat Stu's 172bhp n/a Coop! :_poke:
Still reguard yours as the best ever Coupe jonny :)

... still gutted I didnt get to see it in the 'flesh'

Did you ever get your prize from Redline? :D
