75 V6 Ratlle - inlet manifold?

Hi,

My rover 75 2.5 V6 has just had a new starter motor fiited at the garage.
They have also informed me that with the bonnet up, they can hear a quite loud rattle on start up - quieter once the engine is warm. Said it alsmost sounds like a ball bearing noise rattling.

Could this be the inlet manifold?

If I dont get it sorted staright away, could I be damaging the engine?

What would it cost to fix if it is the inlet manifold?

The garage said they can take the top off o investigate - this will cost aprox £100. Is it worth doing, or should I just prepare for a new inlet manifold?

I just collected the ar from the garage - it is quite a rattley noise at start up from cold - but thebn disappears once the engine has warmed up.

Its alot more noticeable with the bonnet up - lots of soundproofing, which is why I wasnt really aware of it before - at least not in an intrusive way.

Any ideas / advice?

Does the fact the rattle disappers once engine is warm, mean its less severe, or less likely to cause any damage?
Chances are it's the mechanism in the Manifold that's making the rattle. My V6 2.0L was doing the same and in the end was more like a tractor than a car.I got a used Manifold on eBay for Euro170 delivered ,spent about 3 hours fitting it and no more rattle.
I was wondering that seeing as the KV6 is about 14 years old...is there a different inlet manifold that will fit?

No, nothing else to fit.

I expect it is only a VIS valve motor that has failed, easy fix £110ish
Or how about using old-skool vacuum actuators to work the valves in the inlet manifold????

A lot of motorbikes use vacuum devices to operate valves inside airboxes etc?
Check the VIS motors first and repair them your self. There is "How To's" on here if you search. This is a Very cheap way of sorting the rattle issue if it is the VIS motors and you feel confident to follow the tutorials.

If it turns out that the inlet manifold has gone then look at the info in this thread... Click Me

Hi,

Looks like my problem might be the VIS VALVES then.

thanks for that - found the how to - but definately too involved for me. Is this something a garage would take on - repairing the VIS VALVES motor? If so, any idea how much cost would be involved (or hourts of labour?)?

One question - if I run the car as is, would I be doing any damage, or risking any potential damage?

Probably wont do a lot of damage but you will not be getting the best out of the engine and MPG. I doubt a garage will undertake repairing the VIS motors, They will change them for you but new ones can cost up to £80 - £100 each plus labour. If you get new ones from Rimmers or try Terry at TS Autos I think he may have some in stock you can change them yourself in 10 minutes. 4 screws for each and just unplugging the electrics a very simple job to DIY.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but can someone PLEASE tell me this noise isn't a new manifold required? :(

Hi,

Well there is a noise that appears to be coming from there however there is a 'chirpy or squeeky' noise as well. Do you know when the timing belts, tensioner and idler were changed?

John
It's very difficult to decipher that engine noise, could you do the same video but vary the engine revs a little please?
Sure will guys, will do so tomorrow thanks. The one saving grace is that the engine doesn't appear to be struggling at all. Will post tmrw, thanks
If you rev the motor up high and it sounds like a bucket of bolts the VIS butterflies are broken off the shaft and therefore a new manifold or take out the butterflies (on another thread)
If it is a rattle at idle only,it is probably just the VIS actuator which you can change.I had the later rattle, had mechanics telling me it was everything from injectors to tappets.Put in a new VIS actuator and it was quiet as a mouse.
Ok thank you. There's an evident rattle at idle, but nothing out of the ordinary when driving. Would I feel something in the cats driving? Got a vid ill upload in a min
ok heres 2 vids...

1 - accelerating from lights

sounds ok from in the car i think, but bad under the bonnet?
See less See more
Does not sound like the death rattle to me.
