620Ti Starting and Fuel Consumption Problem

Hi Dave,

I have had this problem since I bought the car (about 3 weeks ago). Apart from being annoying, it's costing me a fortune in petrol!

Symptoms:
1. Car is difficult to start and sometimes requires 3 or 4 attempts. Starter motor turns over (so battery is OK) but sometimes disengages and the motor just spins!
2. The car nearly always starts first time if I put my foot down on the throttle about an inch or so.
3. Fuel consumption is only 18-19 mpg around town (I used to get around 25mpg in my other Ti)

The car has been down to SMC Rover in Slough and here were there findings:

1. Carried out testbook - no fault codes
2. Reset throttle cable (was too tight)
3. Checked and reset base idle ("was 62 steps now 32 steps")
4. Carried out MAP sensor test - reading was too high

The car is still pretty much the same. So, I guess that the MAP reading too high is the main clue here...

What can cause this? Apart from the low mpg, once started the car runs fine.

Rover have suggested:

1. Timing (Cams) could be out.
2. Faulty MAP sensor.
3. Faulty ECU

I guess low mpg means it is running too rich. Any advice appreciated on where to start (BTW I have changed the plugs and leads).

Could I have two seperate problems ??

Many thanks Dave

Cheers

I can't see that that is possible.
The MAP sensor could be faulty, giving higher readings than std?

Does the ring gear seperate on T-16 turbo flywheels? That could be the cause of your spinning, or the solenoid is faulty.

Faulty MAP sensor will cause rich running, and hence high fuel consumption.
Faulty Cam sensor could be a cause of rough running.
Faulty ECU could deffo cause these problems.
Faulty water temp sensor can cause a cold start problem.

I would suggest finding somebody with a similar car, and borrowing sensors and the ECU one at a time until you find the fault.

The dodgy running?? try the suggestions that Grant has.

The starter is a common problem - I'll be compiling a tutorial to fix this, soon!! :D
(its the clutch drive)

Somebody else had the cold start problem and had to depress the throttle to get it started. Does the throttle continue clicking for a while after turning off the the ignition - it should do for about 2secs normally - anymore than this can point to a faulty ECU. About 70+vat from a breakers near me!!

Grant/Dave - thanks for the advice guys.

Dave - yes the stepper does click for a couple of seconds when I turn off the ignition. I compared this with my other 620ti before I sold it and the stepper motors made the same sound on both.

Tried disconnecting the coolant temp sensor with the ignition on today and the stepper motor repositioned so it seems to be working in some way...

My main concern is to sort the mpg problem first (as its costing me lots of ÂŁÂŁÂŁ) and then I'll sort the starter motor.

Anyone know if the MAP sensor can be replaced without changing the ECU? As I thought the sensor was built into the ECU.

Thanks,
Wayne

The MAP is part of the ecu - so yes, an exchange ecu is the only way..

The fact the MAP is "slightly high" could well point to a duff MAP sensor, cam timing out, or a blockage in the exhaust system (I've seen blocked cats cause so much backpressure that the MAP value has been way too high!).

Thanks Brian,

Going to get the cambelt changed within the next few weeks so the timing will be checked then.

I've got a decat pipe sat in my shed at the moment so I guess I could take the cat off and see if that helps.

Have fitted a new coolant temp sensor today but that has made no difference to the starting problem.

Hello to everybody. I am writing you from Greece. I own a ti and i have the same problems, plus that when i use the A/C, it decreases the idle in about 750 to 700 rpm and sometimes engine stops running. Any idea about that???? Please help, i cant find what causes all these.

Im running my MAP sensor externally-can be cut off the board in the ECU and soldered up externally-only way to get a replacement MAP is cut one out of another ECU (must be a turbo ECU if its for a Ti)-have found a motorola MAP sensor in farnells but its 2.5 bar-only a 2 bar one is suitable

So the hole problem is in MAP sensor? I ve been told that is the cold run sensor. To tell the truth mine also makes some cuts during running on any gear under 2000 rpm. Is it possible to tell me where is the MAP sensor placed?
