Could be coolant temperature sensor faulty.
When it fails the ECU uses a sort of 'mid range' figure to keep running but could result in under fueling when the engine is cold and over fueling when the engine is hot.

Ive just purchased a rover 45 on a 52 plate, 72000 on the clock. I am having problems when driving when engine is cold. Car starts fine but when I pull away engine cuts out on me, battery light comes on ect. car is fine when driven for about 10 mins. Any help would be appreciated.

So now it looks like dirty or faulty idle control valve, see here:-its a 1.6i, revs are erratic as well
