25 xli rev's on its own

hi guy,s new to the site which i found by a google search. I hope someone can help me regarding a problem that my wife's car has developed, the car is a 54 plate rover 25 1.6 ixl. This is her second 25 her first being a 96 1.6 si which she loved and kept until 06 and having loved the car want a similar vehicle. Any way to the problem which has just started after 2 years of carefree motoring the car has now started to raise and lower rev's on its own probably between 2 and 3000 rev's and sometimes when it does and you dip the clutch it rev's out of contol and the only thing to do is swich the ignition off. When you restart the engine it settles down to a lower revbut not to a steady tick over, when you have the problem you can be coming up to a junction/circle depress the clutch and the rev's will be up and then down when cruising along at say 50 take your foot off the throttle and it hold the rev's or will drop after 5 sec's. you never know when the car is going to start doing the above nor when it clears which it does. The car is dangerous and the couple of garages ive been in you get "typical rover problem carnt get diognostis carn't get bits so dont do rovers" I do hope someone on the forum can help and give me some pointers. One last thing i have lubed all the linkage and cables with no change, i would like to thank in advance for all replies to this thread cheers Phil

Hi and Welcome to the forum. :welcome:

Shame about the circumstances though. I cannot offer you any mechanic advice although Id like to say what the garages have said about parts etc.. is utter crap. There are 2 MAJOR companies that specialise in NOS for Rover/ MG cars. These are Rimmer Bros and Xpart. You may find a local ex MG Rover dealer is now something else but does Xpart. Both companies you can find online too. Id advoid 'local general garages' and try to go to specialist MGR people who know about these cars. :)

Whats your location?

Also, I hope someone comes along with advice and that your car is sorted soon. :) Good Luck. :broon:
Welcome, I had a similar problem on my MG ZS on a really hot day when stuck on the motorway. Not knowing what to do I put my foot underneath the accelerator pedal and lifted it up. The car dropped back to normal idle and I haven't had the same problem since. My guess is that the pedal itself may be loose so its actually sitting in a permanent state of a tiny bit of throttle, or maybe there is a worn bush somewhere but perhaps one of the clever chaps in the 25/ZR specific section can confirm that.

+1, but also you need to go to better garages. I use a tiny one near me and the guy who works on my car has a general cheapy diagnostic unit which has been fantastic for my 25.

I can't really help much though apart from that!
thanks

thanks for your replies guy's , would like to point out that the engine rev's from about 1500 to 3000 rev's up and down, up down, up down and so on untill it rev's out of control and you have to turn the engine off it is not the pedal nor any cable levers on the carb as i have looked i have seen a rimmer bros at Lincoln about 35 miles away and will contact them in the morning cheers Phil
If your car has a plastic throttle body its possible that the throttle flap is sticking slightly open as sometimes the throttle body warps and the flap sticks - see if you can psuh the flap shut with the engine running by turning the linkage or your throttle return spring is weak or broken - easily checked though.

Otherwise there is an IACV (Idle air control valve) that allows more air in when the engine is cold, this can play up and if stuck open, will increase the revs - easily removed and give it a clean with carb cleaner.

Or - not sure if the Rover 25 has this but if the same as the MGF & TF - try this -
It may be worth while resetting the stepper motor, here are the instructions -
1) Start the engine and warm up to a normal working temperature.
2) Turn off the ignition.
3) Turn on ignition to stage II (with electric window available but don't start the engine).
4) Press the accelerator all the way down and fully release five times repeatedly.
5) Wait for at least 15 seconds and then turn off the ignition.

Exactly the same problem as the wifes streetwise. Turned out to be the step motor. had it replaced everything back to normal.
